Knocking noise at low revs
hi i have a 04 plate wrx which has done 40000 miles, today got home from work and opened engine bay. played with the throttle and noticed a ratlling/knocking noise from around the turbo area when the revs go low. so thought that it could of been the turbo when its spooling down.
phoned my friend whos got a subaru, he rekons cant be turbo, its either the bottom end or maybe loose spark plug or bolt or even the cat.
please help

Tappets can become noisy on Scoobs & that is in that area, Bottom end & tappets sound totally different though, Best get someone with some genuine knowledge to have a listen..
Have you checked the oil level ??
When was the oil last changed ??

I recommend a decent oil that should cure this unless it is something more sinister.
I personally doubt it is anything to do with the turbo...
Speak to Opie Oils - he advised me that dependant on your driving style and miles, journey length etc, sometimes a slightly thinner oil is better for the engine as it can quickly get around the engine....

I'm hoping it is just the heat shield as, jus rattles when revs goin down and also noticed it when turned the engine off. Iv been driving it to work about 40 miles there and back on country roads, so no motorway.

Before you do anything else, get a compression test done, it will tell you how healthy your pistons/bores/heads are? If you have oil smoke coming from the turbo I would take the intercooler off and see if any oil has gone through it, could be a blown piston, comp test will show this........good luck..........Andy
