2002 uk STI noise?????????

I've just built an engine for the above, it's running sweet but it has a noise coming from the n/s head, the owner said it was doing it before the engine blew. It sounds a bit like piston slap but happens at all engines temps and comes and goes? Anyone ever had similar, could it be something to do with the VVC?
