Default Leaking Upipe on P1 advice please..

Upon a having a recent service done on my P1 by RCM, I was told my Upipe was leaking and would need to be changed in the near future.

had to end up having a new rad fitted at the time which ate into the budget so did'nt have the upipe changed at the time.

What are the consequences of it leaking?

Would it cause a noticable reduction in power due to the slight leak of exhuast gases going to the turbo?

Is it potentially dangerous to the engine in any way?

Am on the search for a new one now so will be changed very soon but a bit worried about driving the car as it is at the mo is will it be fine?

Also, I understand the standard item has flexible joints and have heard this can be a problem? would it be better to uprate it to a better one and which one at that??

All advice appriciated.

Thanks!

(am running a de-catt down pipe with sports catted centre section and backbox if thats of any relavence to advice given)

if you do buy uprated/after market one make sure it is the standard diameter as it will kill the spool up if its any larger than standard.

I think RCM would have stressed it as urgent if it was very dangerous .... but that said i wouldnt drive on boost with anything wrong personally - not worth something serious going wrong

Didnt think there was another P1 in Harrow ....

Look in the FS section - Harvey is selling a load of stuff and might well have something suitable

Depends if it's blowing on wires or something - sounds unlikely otherwise Matt or Ollie would have told you to do something about it. Did they say if it was the gasket blowing or one of the welds going? If the former - easy peasy- get new gaskets and re fit. If the latter either get it welded or do as above.
Don't go bigger bore than oem as it can kill spool up. New oem probably isn't that much and it's obviously lasted 10 years to now...

Thanks for the advice bud.

They did'nt say where it's leaking from but am happy to change it for a new item as it's done it's job now.

Interesting what you say about not going for a bigger bore upipe and killing the spool up, I almost bought a Japspeed Stainless steel upipe today which had a bigger bore compared to the O/E item.

I was adviced this would be better for spool up as it would let the exhuast gases flow better into the turbo??

Is it a case that the standard bore pipe on the standard P1 VF28 turbo works better by creating more pressure due to the smaller internal bore?

I'm confused now, and need to change the upipe asap so all advice appriciated!

Thanks all.

Just fitted one to my mates P1.

Std is best IMHO. Can be had 2nd hand for 20 quid.

I think they are all the same for classics so dont pay a premium.

LoL funny you should have this problem. I took my exhaust of 4times to find out what was blowin and in end found out it was my uppipe. Orderd a new stainless steel 1 now.

And yes you will loose power but i diden't notice abig difference. Just sometimes the turbo would feel very lagy.

I'm not 100% certain on the physics but as you say it seems intuitive that if you have the same amount of gas to flow in a given time then a larger bore wouldn't need the gas to flow so fast whereas a narrower bore pipe would speed the flow into the turbo and thus spool up. If all your system is big bore and a monster turbo then maybe, but I'd drop Ollie an email if you have any doubts - he always responds.

Good luck either way
