Launching in an auto
I got an auto wrx, which is fine as I bought it for the lazyboy factor, but, how safe (and this might be a spastic question) is it to build up the revs and dump it into drive, kinda like dropping the clutch in a manual.?.
I did it today by accident (dont ask) and almost broke my neck with the pull, but dont fancy doing it again if it means blowing parts of my car up!

By accident! that must have been a surprise...
Not sure, altho I've heard of a chap who used to do that in a Nissan Stagea auto, don't think it did the gearbox any good and I wouldn't recommend it personally (at least, I wouldn't do it very often ), but it seemed to hold up. I must admit i've done that once or twice in my old Legacy H6 and it seemed to survive. Wasn't full blown launches tho, just 4000 rpm and drop into drive etc. so not sure how many it would take before it gave up

Put into Drive. Stick your left boot hard on the brake pedal, and give it full throttle. The engine revs will rise until the toque converter reaches it stall speed and wont go any higher. (Don't hold it at the torque converter stall speed for more than 10 seconds.) When you do this, the trans is forced to drop into !st gear. When you take your foot off the brake you can "feather" it to relieve any shock loading much as you would with a clutch on a manual, or you can "dump" it. You will leave manuals choking in your dust. I've been driving autos using both feet for over 45 years and never had a problem.

hmmmm, tried it, and it is pretty nippy but not much more than driving normally. No sure the car would be very happy with it being done too often - it felt a little alien and hard on the old girl. I bet torque converters aint cheap either...
are the engines for auto's the same as manuals? i.e. can you lift one out of a manual and drop it into an auto? or is it impossible?

LOL - would only recommend 5 seconds using the "stall test" method of launching unless you have a high stall and re-enforced torque converter (to prevent ballooning) and strengthened flex plate fitted.
Engines are the same, so its just a matter of swapping the flywheel for the flex plate on the auto.
