Default FMIC's Damaged?

Just curious really of how many people have damaged their FMIC's to the point where they need new cores?

I have reacently had mine fitted, and obviously it's quite open to abuse from stone etc at higher speeds!

How common is it to knacker them?

I wouldn't have thought so. I'm expecting a lot of them! But on big stone at 120+ could probably do a lot of damage.

JGM had his badgered...

But I don't know of any non-accident type failures !

P.S. It could also take out your windscreen, but you don't grille that up ! Quite unlikely imho.

Mine has mesh in front of it to stop those nasty stones from hitting it

Last thing you want is leaks, plus remember that your FMIC sits lower to the ground than the windscreen hehe.

Oh and i suppose if all our roads were like the autobahns then you wouldn't have to cover it, but hay think of roadworks and our roads in general.

Large angled stone at the Legal speed of 70MPH (not 120mph ahem ahem) will dink the bar guaranteed.

I wouldn't take any chances with £300 worth of IC and certainly wouldn't advise of having one installed without protection unless it was for track use only (even then i would think twice) possibly because i'm a tight git hehe

This might be a stupid question......

But how can you tell if you have a leak in the IC? As I probably won't put a grill on...

if you know you have had impact damage you can pressure test them.. I pressured to about 70psi and sprayed soapy water on it to check..

On Hybrid cores I know of no failures due to stones being thrown up on the road. I know of one failure each from hitting pheasant and deer and any other failures have been RTA related. I normally carry a couple of spare cores, both New Age and Classic but have no Classic spare core stock for the next couple of weeks as two cores only have gone out in two weeks due to RTAs.

Personally, I would not fit a mesh grill.

harvey, I have a 93 WRX and intend on getting a Hybrid soon.

Would it be okay to keep the OEM bumper maw's multi slats in place... or best to cut them away? Would the ACT's be significantly increased if they weren't cut away?

In any case, will the Hybrid still fit with the slats in place?!

you have to remove the slats or you could just cut the intercooler into strips to fit between the slats

Howl!

Seriously, I thought they had to be removed. No bother.

P.S. Nice array of motors you own Simon (as on Facebook). Dare I comment on how the Evo VI looks (scarpers for cover... lol).

the intercooler sits too far forward to retain the slats.

Yeah, assumed that would be the case.

How does the power delivery/driving experience/handling, etc. compare to the Imp? (sorry for going off-topic for a bit).
