Default Overfilled the oil.

Oil light kept coming on when cornering and braking, so I checked the level and it didn't even read on the dip-stick :/ Bought a 4L container as the manual says the capacity is 4L, poured about 2L in, checked the 'stick and it still didn't read, left it a bit, checked again and still nothing, poured about another 1.5L in and it's now way over the 'full' mark:

Pretty sure I know the answer is I need to drain some out, but thought I'd just check on the off-chance it's fine...

no i would say get it out asap (wouldnt drive it till its out) - the engine will thank you for it!

I am paranoid about my oil levels , check them at least once a week

remove it as soon as you can, mine was overfilled once and all the sensors were caked with oil and took an age to clean, the two knotches on the dip-stick only account for one litre so little top ups now and again do the trick

it shouldnt need any more than 1 litre to take it from low level to full so yes drain some out having too much oil can be just as bad as not enough.

The level should be nearer the "F" mark when cold, but can hit the "Groove" cut out in the dipstick when hot..

*sigh* Thanks for the replies guys.

Been stood in the rain trying to syphon it out of the dip-stick tube but it's so slow it's painful and seems to have made no difference :[ Luckily I can get a lift to and from work tomorrow. My other plan was to just loosen the sump plug and drain some, but I had a feeling the washer would need changing, so looks like I'll be doing my first oil change tomorrow eve. Fun times... Especially as I've basically just wasted £30 worth of oil >:[

Sounds like you were lucky to get away without bearing damage, allowing the oil to get that low? Could have been a nasty case of self inflicted re-build expense!

take the sump plug out for a split second. You CAN reuse the sump plug washer. ive resused mine before loads without leaks. ive also over filled mine before with no ill effect. remeber that your oil level will be upto the notch when hot and only up to the f mark when cold.
dont panic. over filling by a small amount wont hurt. i always keep mine topped right upto the notch when its hot.

Thanks again guys :]

All sorted now (I hope), sump plug out, oil drained, plug back, level seems pretty much perfect. Fingers crossed it's fine.
