Right iv got a rather loud knocking/tapping coming from the engine bay, sounds like very loud tappets like you'd hear on an old mk4 rs turbo but worse. Plus blue/white smoke, is it my piston rings? What is it, please help?? very concerned....

 

How long have you had the car? If you've just bought it have you heard it from cold start before? What year/spec is the car?

Sounds like it could be piston slap and so long as it goes away once the car warms up it's nothing to worry about.

 

Its a 98 spec 4 door sti 2.0, had the car about a week. Iv driven it about 5 times since owning it and engine never sounded this way before. bought the car off my friend whos owned it for about 5 years and he mentioned he had never heard anything like it in the time he had owned it, The engine became noticeable when i pulled into my road this afternoon, engine warm. There is also blue smoke but ithink this is down to blue smoke..... Hope someone can help me with my dilemma, havent had much joy so far unfortunately

 

were abouts is the sound coming from the middle off or the edge, or just one side of the block

if so you have got piston slap and its a case of rebuild or new engine...

ouch, that sounds nasty. That's not piston slap - at least not what I know as piston slap which is something harmless if only at cold start (which my car has had for at least the last 60k miles and still going strong, much milder than that sound though). That is something much more serious and Al Goss if yours sounds like that then

 

only had that car a week! then that happened, was a couple of years back!

new i`m on the prowl for another scoob!

Yeah thats what my sounds like but not as violent, but guessing its the same problem, so what has to be replaced, New pistons? rings? just so i no, thanks....

 

mine got worse over 2 days, started quiet....

when i showed it to the mechanic he said that its beyond repair and that it would be best to fit a recon engine.

i know its bad news, been there myself!

Thats not piston slap thats bottom end failure
Mine was exactaly the same 2 monts ago,
needed a full rebuild

 

if yours sounds the same as youtube video then it bad news!
rebuild or drop a recon engine in, either way not a cheap fix
