WHAT IS THIS ?

Hi guys in the middle of fitting my engine and have come across this part that has 2 tubes coming off it ?

Looks like the purge valve. One pipe goes to the inlet manifold and the other pipe connects to the carbon canister via the hard pipe under the inlet manifold.

Yeh found where it goes now is this valve needed? What is the carbon canister for?
