Mud Flaps Or Not?
#1
Depends on what model your car is. The MY01 WRX does not have the option of Subaru supplied mudflaps (the Subaru ones for the new shape Impreza do not fit over sills without cutting ) and they sell instead "aero splashgaurds".
Given that these cover less area than the standard ones (used on the TS)
I wonder whether they are as effective? Anybody with them fitted to their car care to comment?

Derek,
The black moulded Subaru mudflaps which look similar to those on the red car pictured above, but are specially shaped to fit over the MY99/00 turbo's side-skirts are just under £100 for a front/rear set from a Subaru main dealer.
I think it is fairly common to get stone chips down the side of the car. Firstly Subaru's paint is very soft. Secondly if you get close to the bottom of the door pannel and look forward you can see quite a bit of the tyre protrudes from the wheel arch and as such can fire dirt and stones at the bodywork.
For the expense, these Subaru flaps are not meant to fit very well though - although they should do the job.

At the moment it is impossible to keep my car clean I live down a few country lanes which are very muddy.
I would like to know is it worthwhile fitting mud flaps and how effective are they at keeping the car a bit cleaner. Do they help protect the paint work just behind the front wheels.
If so do Subaru fit them and how much do they cost to be fitted?
Cheers

subaru definitley fit them, as I have a set on my MY00 - as to how much, not too sure - I think they make a difference though - i don't get those huge dirt streaks aft of the arches!

My car is MY99 so interested in effectiveness of the actual mud flaps for the old shape imprezas.
If mud flaps are not present can the paint be damaged on the lower half of the doors?
Thanks

The mudflaps on my MY00 are effective at stopping heavy build up of mud, but car still very dirty after a quick blast round the local backroads.
I think they were around £100 plus fitting and are the ones which go round the lower sill, not the aero ones.
Worth buying IMO

How the fecking hell can they charge £400 for a set, to buy the material "the good stuff from Keylan body protection" only costs about £15 or so they charge £385 for a fecking logo and to cut it to shape seems like daylight robbery to me and there must be some suckers out there that brought them!!!
Rant Mode off now
Huxley
Ps. if anyone wants to send the pattern for the mud flaps I will make some at cost price?

Do you find (like me) that they catch at almost every opportunity?
Speedbumps...leaving my drive etc.
My MY01 hasnt been lowered but the flaps are half-off due to catching on everything!
Bloody useless

Huxley,
where are you getting the material for £15? When I was looking to make a set for my scoob I was quoted just over £100. I can't remember the type of material, or the company since all the emails were from work.
I ended up buying tha largest flaps I could locally, plain rubber ones for a Landie, then cutting them down. Not bad at £50 for 4, and I still have enough left to make the prodrive style ones for summer use.
Cheers,
Mike.

If you are not to bothered about any thing to fancy then I bought a set of universal subaru mudflaps for LEGACY/IMPREZA from my local subaru dealer for about £20 for both front and rear. These are genuine subaru items with SUBARU on them, I drive an MY97 Catalunya but they should fit later models upto 01.

Thanks for the good news! Why is it my local dealer knows nothing about it?
Any chance of a picture - it's unusual for you not to have one available .

Thanks Phil! They look excellent - I'll pop out and get a set.

PS The wife is not so impressed - that's another meal out I owe her - she thinks I spend more on the Scoob than on her! Probably true, but I'm daren't work it out as I'll lose the discussion.

If you don't want to pay for a set of STI mudflaps, a guy from the US has put the templates and instructions for installation onto the web.
The URL is:
http://www.ravensblade-impreza.com/modifications/exterior/stiflaps/stiflaps.html
I made up a set (modified slightly due to the differences between the old and new models) based on this for my MY01 STI and they look great. The only change I made was to use panel adhesive rather than to drill holes for the inside of the front flaps.
As to the material, I ended up using heavy duty rubber sheet rather than the Eurathane as it was extremely expensive.
Good luck...
