Advice needed

OK have now put a deposit down on a totally bog standard (but immacualte ) reddish blue 98 4 door and hopefully will get it next weekend. I love the car as it is but would like to know what are the best mods to start off with if i wanted to customise it and in what order. ECU? Exhaust? Wheels? What ones to get and how much? Would like to increase bhp as I was looking at sti4 but couldn't find one I liked and insurance was ridiculous so I know i'm massively down on bhp with a UK car. Looked at prodrive/subaru site but no prices given on upgrades. Any advice, links to pics/info and comments greatly appreciated!
Cheers

Bob,
Welcome, my views would be:
1. What tyres do you have? The OEM tyres are generally regarded as cr@p - ditch them ASAP. I'd personally recommend Toyos (£400/set).
2. 4 wheel alignment and may be Eibach springs (£400). Consider getting braided brake hoses (£70) at same time - most of the labour will already be paid for in changing the springs.
3. Exhaust changes - backbox for the noise (£250-300, downpipe for response (£300 inc. fitting), full de-cat for maximum benefit (£650). Keep an eye on the For Sale forum - most types come up from time to time. Once you decide what you want, post in Wanted forum.
4. Head lights - ditch the bulbs and replace with Xenon+50%, PIAA Supper White for the sidelights (£30). If you're going to do a lot of driving on country lanes with not much traffic consider ditching the front fogs and getting driving lamps (£250-400).
5. Quickshift, price varies.
Don't worry too much about the standard car being 'vastly' down on power - a fully de-catted standard turbo will show 250-260bhp on a rolling road.
Here's some links to get you started:
www.scoobysport.co.uk - Their exhaust is very popular
www.scoobymania.co.uk
www.grahamgoode.com/subaru/catalog.htm
www.tsl-motorsport.co.uk - For Eibachs & alignment
Cheers

Thanks very much for your comments m8. Will keep a link to this post for reference. I think bhp is my biggest grudge in that i was looking at 280 and have settled for 215 so might concentrate on this first. Scoobysport will be first place of visit as I have a good m8 who lives in Basildon and its only 45 mins up the road. So looks like exhaust will be first then I will look into ecu's and go from there. Not something I'm gonna do straight away anyway as I'm wiped out cash wise for a while with chucking every penny on the car and also bike insurance/tax/service is rapidly approaching for the summer, plus the scooby is 2k off its 30k service. Could be an expensive summer!!!
P.S. what should I be looking at cost wise for a 30k service?

F***ing 'ell!!!! My local scooby garage just quoted £505 inclusive! I don't think I will be going to them! Please someone tell me this is way over the top? Have a performance car garage nearer which specialises in Japanese sports cars so think I might be phoning them!

Bob,
Sorry mate, don't think so - think my dealer meant £400+vat.
If your car's out of warranty, you might as well get a quote from an independant specialist, as long as they have a good reputation - why not ask the question on here?
BTW, I know you say you want to go for horsepower, what are you intending to do? Drag race STi4's? Cos, IMHO, a range of mods that allow you to brake later, corner faster, plus a bit of horsepower , will make the car a lot quicker on the road. More so than a standard car with monster horsepower.
Cheers

Hi Tim
I am gonna try GDA Sports Cars just outside of Tunbridge Wells, I have seen them mentioned on Scoobynet, plus I took advice off of them for looking at STi's before, so hopefully it will save me some money on dealership prices but its also a lot closer to where I live.
The thing with the bhp is purely cos I love quick acceleration, hence owning a bike, and as a mate has an STi I just would like to do these mods first. I fully understand your point as to better and safer braking and cornering and one of things I noticed when test driving the car was that the brakes don't seem that wonderful considering its power. It's something I will do, and maybe after driving the car for a while I will realise this is more important than out and out acceleration.
Cheers

Sorry,I have no idea of the price.
It was like that when I bought it from Adams last year.I just took it for a service at PE since I knew they done all the work and I wasnt sure what had been done.
Not bad gains for a zorst and chip tho'!Air filter etc is all standard.

After just getting an amazing quote on insurance from Chris Knott, check out the insurance page, I wont be modding for the next year apart from ss bb as the quote was unbeatable and worth waiting for a year before modding more. Thank you again guys for your advice, I will be keeping the post for when I do modify at a later stage.
