If the car is a daily drive, go for a 5w-40 which will be fully synthetic. If you track the car, a 10w-50 may be better.
It's worth using a fully synthetic oil as they protect the engine better, last longer and still retain their properties at higher temperatures, making them better for tuned engines or engines that are worked hard.
Have a look at these
5w-40, 5w-40 oil, 5w40, 5w/40
The Silkolene Pro S, Motul 300V and Redline are the top of the range oils and about as good as oil gets. The Fuchs Titan Supersyn or Motul 8100 X-cess are good cheaper alternatives.

Oilman, is 5W recommended for New Ages because it's low temp 5W viscosity makes the AVCS heads work better or something?
If not, why is 5W recommended for New Ages, and 10W for the Classics, as lowest 'cold', viscosities?

The 5w and 10w numbers refer to the cold vicosity, with a 5w being thinner than a 10w when cold. As it's thinner, it will flow better and get to the head quicker, so that is probably the reason for the change in recommendation. A 5w-40 and a 10w-40 will be the same viscosity when hot, so there is no difference when they are up to temperature. Handbooks give the basic oil recommendation as the cars are sold in many countries and sometimes certain grades can be difficult to get hold of. A 5w-40 is preferable to a 10w-40 in the older Imprezas as they will still benefit from the increased flow rate when cold.

A lot of owners on here would challenge that a 5W is too thin a cold viscosity for the EJ engine (10W being their prefered choice). Do they have any grounds for thinking this? Or, out of the two, is the 5W definitely the best to use?
What about 15W - is this suitable too?
