my99 maf issue,frustration....help pls.
hi,my uk impreza 99 wagon has started to idle badly but only when i blip the throttle,if i drive gentle it seems to be ok. whats happening is the revs will drop quickly down to almost stalling, then recovers, but this only happens when i blip it.i recently had a fault code 22,knock sensor which has been replaced with a new one, reset ecu etc and everything was fine until about 2 weeks later when the idle problem occurred.there were no fault codes showing so i havent reset ecu after installing a brand new maf as there should be no reason to?i replaced maf as i thought it was failing and it has made no difference.ive rechecked that i have no leeks between intercooler and turbo etc and all seems fine, what could it be?.im thinking maybe icv or 02 sensor but dont want to fork out £200 for icv or £100 for 02 sensor on the off chance that one of these could be the fault, again i have no fault codes.surely one of u guys has come across this before and help with this would be great. thanks.

I don't know but I used to have an MY99 with PPP & approx 70K on the clock iirc. Whilst at Brands Hatch, the bottom end exploded and killed the engine.
This was due to a faulty MAF
MAFs on MY99/00 should be treated as a consumable item - change every 40k miles or 2 years & you should be OK. Mine was not the only instance of a weak 99/00 MAF that has been recorded.
I may, of course, have no relevance for your particular case but just imparting knowledge on another know POF

I think you thinking too hard on this one - to me it sounds like you got an old fashioned air leak
some pipe is letting air in post the maf sensor - check all your connections and espescially on a car of your age check where the oem plastic pipe becomes rubberish (rubbish) as it mates to the turbo inlet, the next suspect is the oem pipe from turbo to intecooler - the one underneath the intercooler
heres another test - switch car off
unplug maf sensor
start car
and drive a bit - did it improve ?
if it did then your new maf is dicky
if it didnt the problem is elsewhere
basic troubleshooting is your friend here
