Default Changing turbo gaskets..

Had my car a month. Noticed a slight burning smell. Was told it could be a connection to the turbo.

Today when i started it puffed out a little blue smoke.

Posts on the internet seem contracdictor. Im hoping that its a **** gasket on the turbo allowing some oil through (based on there was a slight burning smell before.

I really cannot afford a blown piston ring or valvestem oil seals .

Can anyone offer some words of hope and say it oculd be this?

Most recent change was oil temp/press/boost gauges. No leaks. No reason i can think of why any of these would hurt the car.

The cars oil is always warm before giving any beans, doesnt get thrashed, not even got the engine oil above 90. However i dont nanny it.

Will put it in the garage tomorrow and take things apart. Anyone changed the gaskets before. Anyhow to guides?

Cheers
Chris.

carn't see how renewing the gaskets on the turbo will cure this problem you have.the only gasket on the turbo that could give you a smell of burning oil is if the oil return pipe gasket was leaking and oil was dripping onto the uppipe, but if you have a look under the car you will be able to check this without taking the turbo off.or the oil feed pipe ontop of the turbo, which is 2 copper washers.if your car is puffing out smoke on start up then i would most prob say turbo oil seals or valve stem oil seals.

Ok thanks for the info. Are the seals on the turbo renewable? Or is it new/second hand turbo jobby? Will it be clear if i take the turbo off if this could be the problem.

98 sti. car has fsh since new on original turbo. 60k miles

you can have the seals in the turbo renewed, but it means a full strip down of the turbo by a speciailist.probably cost you more than the actual turbo is worth.might be worth giving someone like aet turbos a ring to see what they say.

Ok.

Ill take it off tomorrow and see what i think.

Look like there is one on ebay for 90 quid. Bit of a risk putting a second hand turbo on tho. WIll decide tomorrow. As have not yet diagnosed that that is the problem.

Whats the chances it will never smoke again on start up?

If you get stuck I have a turbo spare. It is a TD04, came off a bug eye with roughly 50000 miles on it, no play, or smoking. I got it as thought my turbo was on its way out, found out it was a leak some where, ha ha

where was your leak. Started today and no smoke. Will still pull it apart tonight and have a real good luck.

td04 is from a wrx right? Need one capable of about 20-25psi. Although if it is gone. I might just take it off the road for a couple of months and put a nice big turbo on.

will see tonight. Only not driven it for one day and missing it. It made the morning commute to work tolerable and even something to look forward too!
