Main oil seal?????
My scooby died just b4 Christmas and the engine was rattling.
The garage have called me 2day and said they think its the main oil seal. They have taken the gearbox out and said I should have it back by Friday.
Any ideas on what this should cost????? I didnt want to ask and scare myself!!!

Hi,
Bout the same time as clutch replace but obdviously without the clutch parts.
Think someone on here said they had a clutch done, drive in drive out in four or five hours, I would have thought somewhere around that.
The seal would be pretty cheap, the labour is the main part.

Is the engine now not goosed ????? You don't want to pay all that labour to remove gear box and refit , no more than £250 ,fit new crank seal £2 ,put back together and find engine goosed due to lack of oil ??
Have you taken it to a subaru specialist eg API if so they will check it all out and car will be sorted , but if some local back street garage they could do more harm than good and cost you more money unecessarily.

Update.....
Had a call from the garage today and they said they have put the car back together and it hasnt fixed the problem! They quoted £479 to do the oil seal.
They now say it needs a engine rebuild and are quoting £2400............
How do I stand in regards to them asking for the £479 for the oil seal?
They diagnosed the problem and got it wrong. Im I expected to pay for this??
HELP

Thats a wopping bill for an oil seal, it shouldn't cost any more than a clutch change's labour, £200 or so.
Unfortunately, as you agreed for them to change the seal, you probably have no come back. But i may be wrong!

If your garage think that a rattly engine can be fixed by replacing the rear main oil seal, then under no circumstances should you be entertaining letting them rebuild your motor

I agree, get the car back and dont let them touch it. Either do it yourself or take it somewhere like API, RCM or Area

As Mit says, £479 is outrageous to change a rear oil seal £200.00 plus parts is all it would cost here.
But if you have sanctioned the work, you're stuck with it. You should have been quoted and if they didn't quote then ask for them to consider now what it should cost in terms of the Subaru time allowed for work schedule.
There also ought to have been a question about " what if it doesn't cure it ? ".
AND now they should be trying to help you get out of this mess, as their diagnosis was clearly wrong.
I also agree that if they are that wrong on the first go, do not let them repair the engine. They don't seem to have a clue what they're doing and this WILL turn into a major saga.

Sorry for whats happened to you ,thought this was goin to happen ,your best bet is contact David at API and speak to him and get it sorted right first time , there are to many smaller garages that think they know what they are doing but have not got a clue really .Don't know where you stand really with the garage diagnosing the fault as just the seal ( was only a bit off with price of seal just trying to make out it was only cheap compared to labour) but them being wrong . As above have said get car off them and get it taken or collected to somewhere that know what they are doing , there are plenty of places people can reccomend to you on here
all the best

This has turned in to a massive headache!!!!!!!
I spoke to the gararge and they say thay have found a replacement engine and can fit it for £1500. This seem expensive to me????????
I dont really want to let them do it as they really dont have a clue.
I think im just going to sell it as it is now

Difficult to be totally exact without seeing hearing the car. BUT:
Collect form a Canterbury postcode £150.00 + VAT
Remove engine, strip fit new crank and bearings, reseal with new oil seals and STi head gaskets, new cam belt and modified oil pump and refit to car: £1200.00 + VAT with a limited warranty.
IE we warrant our work and the parts we have fitted. BUT if a part we have not touched fails, we cannot be responsible for it.
I hope that helps, call me and we can get on with it for you.
Good Luck - David
