Default FMIC vs TMIC on Type R

I can't really make up my mind! Should I get a Hybrid FMIC or upgrade to a STI 7/8 TMIC?

I have a V5 STI Type R with Maxim equal length headers, 3" Invidia exhaust, KN intake and Ecutek.Mapped by Trollspeed to 331 hp 454 Nm. Otherwise stock turbo and so on. How bad is the lag with FMIC and how much later is the boost treshold?

To be honest the boost treshold already feels a bit late considering it's a relatively small turbo. It might be the headers that do it. My car is mostly a road car but I'm going to use it on slalom/autox courses and other tracks sometimes too so the lag would probably be annoying then?

But the FMIC would cool the intake temperature a lot more than an upgrade TMIC I guess?

It would cost a lot more to get the bigger TMIC installation complete since I would need a custom undertray and a new bigger scoop to get the most of it. Don't think the heat soak is a huge problem for me since I don't get stuck in red lights etc very often here.

Not to keen on the idea of cutting the bumper either.

The plan is to tune the car to 400 hp later on.

Help me to decide, please

Hi there, my car is a V3 STI and i,m running similar power to you and the car is now in having a FMIC and Map as we speak, i too thought about the STI 8 TMIC but as you,ve said, the hassle, cost etc it made more sense to go for a FM, plus i intend to go 400+ in a few months so it would of been pointless going TM.

As for lag i,ll tel you in a weeks time, BUT i,ve read different reports about the lag issue regarding fitting a FM, some say it,s hardly noticable tbh matey..

I,m just happy i,ll be keeping it cooler from now on, that was/is my my concern..

Merry Xmas Pete...

If you like driving and can use the gears, lag isn't a problem. Just don't expect a miracle at 30 mph in top gear...

AFAIC, the significantly reduced intake temps far, far outweigh any extra lag you may gain (in any case, you soon learn to 'drive around' any car's foibles IMHO).

Also, when stuck at traffic lights (esp. in hot weather), you'll also be able to enjoy standing start launches (something you should be very wary of doing in a TMIC-equipped car, due to their massive heatsoak properties ).
