wrx dying in boost
Hi Guys,
Got a bit of a problem with my 96 wrx.
When you floor it its fine up until it gets to about 5000rpm, then it starts coughing and spluttering until i change up. It was only doing this in first gear but its been getting progressively worse, and now does it in all the gears. if i accelerate slowly it seems to be fine.
So far iv cleaned the boost solenoid but that made no difference.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

MY96 260ps WRXs boost to 12.71psi, levelling out to 11.78psi - so probably okay (bearing in mind boost gauges aren't supposed to be the last word in scientific accuracy).
As for the MY97 (if yours was manufactured late on between Sep 96 - Dec 96), don't know what they boost at? I expect the same as a the STi (as all saloons had 280ps by then), so possibly 16psi(?)

I should mention its not got the original turbo on it. Its got a tdo5h. Also the dump valve has been removed and the pipes blanked. (this was done by the previous owner).
Its been fine up until now, but could the deleted dumpvalve be the cause of all my problems??

If the boost is fine then perhaps its the knock sensor on the blink. Try doing a diagnostic check and see if it brings this up, do a reset and drive around a bit longer, then do another check to be sure, its sounds similar to the symptoms i was having with a duff knock sensor.

I went to check my coil pack this morning, i pulled off the first ht lead and the connector had snapped. I got a new lead and now its absolutely fine.
Thanks for your help.
