Default Hesitation on acceleration (and it's not the MAF!)

Car has recently started doing this since it's gotten colder; after the car's warmed up, I'll accelerate hard in 2nd or 3rd and I'll get to about 4000 revs, then I get a pause for a second or so and then it carries on accelerating (is this what you'd call a "flat spot?").

It's a bit bloody dangerous in the event I'm overtaking, so I'd like to try and get to the bottom of it. The MAF isn't a problem - it's a little grubby but nothing unusual - it's in much better condition than others I've seen (and I have a spare for testing).

Air filter is a little dirty with a few bits in it (it's a Green panel), but I wouldn't expect that to cause this behaviour.

When the car had its 60k service, one spark plug wasn't changed because the dealer was afraid it had become threaded in the block - could this be the culprit? If so I'm tempted to buy a complete set of Splitfire / NGK platinums and have them fitted....

Any ideas gang? First person to say it's the MAF gets infracted

Okay mate - now, not being an engine specialist, I've looked this up (cos I didn't know where it was and what it was for ). Found this site Oakos Automotive - Subaru Impreza WRX Performance Parts : Manual Boost Controller Installation Instructions

What is it I need to remove, and how should I go about cleaning it?
Sorry I'm a bit of a novice at the engine stuff - I mostly stick to easy electronics stuff like HID kits, stereos, Amps etc.
