Default Acceleration in 5th

Has anyone else with a classic UK Turbo got slow acceleration in 5th gear? It feels fairly quick in all other gears but 5th seems really sluggish.

The car should be running at least 260bhp on its TDO4 so it shouldn't feel as slow as it does in 5th?

Would another remap solve this issue or is it due to gearing?

Thanks

I think its due to physics

I know it's going to accelerate slower than in other gears. I guess the point I was trying to make is that it accelerates very well in other gears but 5th gear isn't rapid

No idea what the gearing ratios are in UK Turbos (i.e. short 1-4 for acceleration and long 5th for cruising...) which could be why you feel such a big difference but I guess it has a lot to do with what speed you are trying to accelerate from in 5th aswell.

My P1 is running 330bhp and 5th does feel slower as is natural I guess..........when you get to 5th gear speeds you are fighting wind resistance aswell......

thanks, That's interesting about your tuned P1 also not extremely quick in 5th. It probably has altogether different ratios to mine anyway

When I had mine remapped by JGM (ecutek 3) he said you'll notice a difference in 5th - and I did. Much less of a cruising gear now - that's what I would have referred to it as before.

Conversely, if I'm on a track and took it to about 125mph in 4th gear then shifted into 5th it doesn't feel too bad so maybe it's lacking torque.[/QUOTE]

125 in 4th mine does that in 5th flat out but it does pickup quick in every gear could be down to your ratio

Thanks guys it probably is due to the gearing with 5th gear in particular. I'm surprised how different the gearing is on the sti's. They must feel pretty quick through the gears.

I'll test my in gear time at some point Scoobyricht and will compare to yours, cheers

sorry, just read last post. Yep I've got a digital boost gauge on the electronic boost controller. Shows about 1.2bar (17.4 psi) at full throttle. The readout on the APEXI Power FC commander seems to say the same

I filled up on Shell Vpower for the first time today (up until now I've always used Tesco 99) and I couldn't believe how different the car felt to drive. I actually felt quick in every gear today and it was smoother to drive?

I'm really surprised by this, could a different type of super unleaded really make it a lot quicker? If so, I'm not sure I want to go back to Tesco 99 anymore

Thanks, car seems to drive really well now and has more than enough power! For comparison's sake I might fill up on Tesco 99 again

The STi with 6-speed feels even worse! 1-4 with circa 370 is nice! In 5th and 6th the difference, by comparison, is very noticable. You keep having to remind yourself that, as the turbo starts to wake up at over 3k you'll already be doing 80+ For a performance car, 5th and 6th are high ratios.
My sons EVO IX 320 has, by comparison, a much more impressive 6th gear performance.

My pulls from 60ish in 5th like a train. Hardly ever come out of 5th on long drives. Im talking a lot of B roads aswell, no motorways near me at all.

Is that on an Sti though mate, as I think they have shorter ratios than the UK cars, and more power?

You're right. Even WRX's have shorter ratios/FD - although not as short as STi's - than the 2000 Turbo AWD. Type R/RA's have even shorter gears too!

Also, check out slipstream's profile and his car's spec - hardly a fair comparison to yours lol.

Just thought I'd update this thread with my findings lately. I had the opportunity to test the 80-100mph speed in my Impreza the other day and I tried it via the GPS speed several times. Each time it clocked it in 5 seconds !!

cheers

Is that with a steady throttle to maintain 80mph, then you slam the pedal to the boards?

That's how I tested it. It doesn't take much time at to spool up which is quite good.

I've noticed that 5th gear seems to pull well at about 70mph onwards . It's probably only attributed to a bit of turbo lag though
