Default Fuel Type and gentle mods

Hi,

I have got a MY00 completely standard car. Just wondered if anybody had experience with using super unleaded instead of standard. Is there any real difference.
Will it cause any problems switching between the two?

Also I wondered what people would recommend in the way of getting some extra power without getting carried away. Don't want to go down the re-mapping route or any major mods at this stage, pennies are a bit tight and I would like to keep the car reasonably standard.

Cheers

Tim

To be honest, you won't find many on here that care about their car and use normal unleaded. Super unleaded (v power) only for me.
As regards mods, a decent exhaust will help, but a decent re-map is the way to go. Even a re-map on a totally standard car will transform it.

Hi timmyt, if its a UK car then normal unleaded will be alright. Personally I would use Super out of preference though. I ran my UK MY99 on normal unleaded for a short time when I first had it (out of ignorance really) it still ran well. Once I changed to Super it felt a lot smoother and more responsive. It does take a while to adjust to Super so don't expect an instant change. The only word of caution I would give you is to stay away from BP Ultimate for some reason Scoob's don't like it and it could cause knock.

As for mods well there aren't really any 'cheap' mods except maybe a replacement air filter (no induction kits) and try to pick up a secondhand cat back exhaust from the classifieds on here.

Cheers for that,

Interesting advice on the fuel, thanks. Thought it might be the case. Like you Skooby53 I hadn't given it a lot of thought until now as I've only had it a couple of weeks. Lucky for me there is a Shell garage just round the corner.

New fuel and filter first then me thinks. Then an exhuast and probably a re-map in the future.

I've heard and read a few things about the exhausts and it's a bit of a nightmare knowing what to go for. I would like to make the car a bit more vocal without getting to the point of it being annoying also I really don't want anything too big. The prodrive pipes I've seen look pretty good size wise but I can imagine them getting pretty pricey.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Tim

Lucky you with the fuel, I travel 15 miles to fill up with v-power, it's well worth the drive! I have had mine mapped to run on v-power or Tesco 99 this gets the optimum out of it. Regarding the exhaust everyone on here has their own preference, but, I went for a Magnex system in the end. It gives a nice deep burble but not over the top (some mornings I leave for work a 5.30 so the neighbours would be angry!). It is very well made a really easy to fit.

What area do you live in as a local 'trusted' mapper is worth his weight in gold for advise.

Hi,

Thanks, I'll have a look into them. As you said though everybody has a different preference. I could do with a mechanical equivalent of a changing room and try a few out. Did you put a complete system on or from the manifold back or just the back box? I was thinking a system from the manifold onwards would be the best cost/performance option.

I live in South Bedfordshire, if you know anybody or if anybody else could recommend a specialist it would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tim
