Default Leaky car!

Has anyone had rain getting into the scoob? My boot is soggy, and the drivers footwell seems wet near the pedals. I am hoping the footwell problem was damp from wet feet after all the rain a couple of weeks back, but can't see where it could be getting in around the boot. The corners actually had pools of water collected where the drain holes had blocked, and water had come in...
Oh yeah, my car is a 97 classic.

Water in the car's boot is usually getting in through unsealed bolt holes for the rear spoiler.

It could of course be that the bootlid is not fully tight down on the catch and this can be adjusted downwards at the loop on the boot scuttle Just inside the body. The catch on the bootlid is not adjustable, but its matching loop is.

So; either tighten the loop catch, or take off the rear spoiler - seal everything with silicone sealer and see how you get on.

Ah, not thought of the rear spoiler one. Took out the back seat base and stripped the boot this afternoon, the spare wheel well was full, and water had got under the back seat too. Looks recent though, no signs of old water damage. I was starting to assume the previous owner had diffferent rear lights fitted, and had put the originals back in to sell it (only owned the car 2 and a half weeks), and the water had started coming in from then onwards. Will have a good look at spoiler and latch tomorrow!

yeah W13dle, it's doing my head in already as I've only had the car for such a short time! The car is really clean and I didn't expect to have a leaky scoob to deal with

its a common problem mate even on some of the newer models its just narrowing it down to find it, like said theres a number of places it can be coming from id try the lights first off you'll be able to tell straight away if its coming though them good luck

The most common leak is around the rear light clusters, around the spoiler is usual when the spoiler has been changed and no seals have been put on. its surprising how much water can get in as it runs off of the roof down the gulley either side of the boot and straight in through the light clusters opening. IMHO its a bad design.

Mine is leaking as well in the boot!! Its a 2003 STI.

Will have to remove the spoiler and silicone under it I think. Where about around the rear light cluster do I need to silicone? I'm not too familiar with the car as it's my 1st impreza, and I've only had it a week.

Thanks

Ok thanks dude. Do I need to remove the clusters, or just mastic around them?

Just had a look in the boot.

I'd say it 100% isn't coming in from lights, as its bone dry round that area. It is quite wet around the back of the boot though, but I cant see any reason why. Around the bolts of the spoiler seems bone dry as well.

Any ideas?

Any sign of panels being replaced in a rear bump ? Sometimes if a rear panel has been replaced there can be a poor sealing job done by the bodyshop and the rear bumper acts as a scoop and pulls rain up into the join.

It's also surprising how much liquid can get in through holes in the floor where things like CD stackers have been screwed down previously etc etc.

Definitely a case for a few minutes in the boot and do the hose trick I reckon. Just make sure you are on good terms with the missus, as it could get cold out there in a few hours, if she decides to take revenge.

I'm not sure if there has been any work done to be honest. Will have to check though cheers.

Will have to go round to my mums house then I think and climb in the boot. Worth stripping the boot lining etc out first though and checking. Need it sorting though as winter is coming.....so that means 99% of the time rain!

How did you solve it? New seal or something?

As my rear screen does seem to mist up a lot when its a bit damp outside.

Get some baby powder and sprinkle it everywhere in the boot then run a hose it may give you an indication and also run your finger behind the covers into the well of the rear wing (where the jack rests) and you may well get a surprise there also (check both sides of the rear inner wings)

I got a similiar problem but no that bad, there was a thick pipe in my rear quarter that was out - I think this plugs into some kind of a drain plug sticking out ut not had a chance to check it out properly, too cold !

Let us know how you get on so future scooby owners doing a search can benefit
