Default Maf? is it playing up?

i Changed back to a standard air box with k&n panel filter, from a 57i indution kit. since then i have noticed a little stutering at about 3000rpm! only when i floor it really, it only happens for a split second then picks up?!
have i damaged the maf in some way while changing the air box?!!
or does it sound like something else
please help

It sounds like the K&n 57i could have damaged the MAF. Is your idling affected too? Unless the car was mapped specifically for the K&N induction kit?

You could try unplugging the power to the MAF sensor when the car is idling and see if the car stalls. If it doesn't it could indicate that the ECU is taking over the MAF's duties meaning the MAF is faulty.

The idling is`nt affected no, i just tried wot you said and it tried to stall but didnt! I havnt had the car remapped but think it might have been at some point! (not much slower than my last my00 278bhp)
So would be worth changing the maf for a start then?

As far as I know the car should instantly cut out if the MAF is ok, so I'd definitely get a new MAF and see how you get on. They don't last long on the MY99 and MY00 and if they are faulty it can potentially ruin your engine. Aftermarket cone filters and induction kits such as 57i's can rapidly lower the life expectancy of the MAF on our models too.

Too much ( £80 + VAT ) but at least it gives peace of mind.

I doubt you'd find an aftermarket one, and I definitely wouldn't trust one off of Ebay etc as you don't know if it's going to be a new one. Visually a second hand one looks no different to a brand new one

Was just tucking into some dinner and I remembered something else in fitting the new MAF sensor (I know I'm sad ) You'll need a security Torx T20 bit to go in a screwdriver as it's the strange star shaped screw not a philips style screw!

These are the ones I have:

7pc SECURITY TORX BITS SET 25mm T9_10_15_20_25_27_&_30 on eBay, also, Screwdrivers, Power Tools, Business, Office Industrial (end time 14-Nov-08 16:45:00 GMT)

cheers mate, I once lost control in an old BMW 318is on a wet S bend and wrapped it around a road sign (I fixed it myself with a new panel though and you couldn't tell the difference :-D . That was enough to make me drive more carefully in the Subaru and any other car!

Where did you get the front splitter from by the way, looks very good!

Rear wheel drive cars are fun but get it wrong and you can have a mess on you hands! My e36 328i sport was the same!
The spliter came with the car, it was cracked when i got it so repaired and painted it after work one night (i hate fiber glass tho lol) it does set the car off
ScoobyWorld do one, i think thats where mine is from!
If you get one can get it painted for peanuts

Count yourselves lucky guys!

A new MAF for my car (v.1/2) would cost £260odd ... But it has to be said, that's offest by how much more robust they are and could last the car's lifetime, compared to the 99/00 one which, if you're unlucky, you can expect to get through about one year on average. That's why some v.5/6 owners tend to regard it as a service consumable, just to err on the safe side...

Blimey, that's about half the cost of the standalone Simtek ECU anyway! (not including the mapping obviously)

It does make sense to get a Simtek, if you're prepared to bite the bullet cash wise... Massive peace of mind knowing the ECU is using the non-f*ckupable (lol) MAP for it's air density measurement.

If I hadn't have come across a PFC very cheaply, then I'd have defo got a Simtek too, for that very reason (plus the 2nd map and other features). Mind you, that said, I do like the Commander's monitoring features, etc...

Simtek FTW!

I know of a New Age that was running very well indeed and making great numbers, from memory 250bhp. Went to have it remapped and soon discovered why ! It was running very lean with a faulty Maf. The remap with a replacement maf was good, but less impressive than coming from a standard running car. And the kick in the nuts at the end of it would have been the £300 for the new maf after paying for a remap.

Nice not having to worry about the maf I have to say.

When using the Simtek, you don't have to do anything under the bonnet other than disconnect the electrical connector to your MAF...

...Get JGM (cheapest and a well respected mapper) to come to you to supply, fit and map the Simtek for only £895... www.jollygreenmonster.co.uk. You just pay his petrol costs, so it's a good idea to arrange a 'mapping day' with other like-minded Sccoby/Evo owners, so as to divvy up the cost beween you
