Possible noises you're hearing are (in order of probability)

1. Power steering belt loose. This is a squeaky kind of noise that increases when you turn the wheel to full lock.
2. Power steering fluid low. Increases with RPM, sounds a bit like a siren.

Since it's intermittent I'm pretty sure it's a loose belt.

Try tightening if the bolt still has some unused threads. It's the bolt next to the alternator. But you have you have to loosen the other bolt on the same bracket before tightening.

Mine does this intermittantly, usually when the wife is in the left hand seat LOL

Seriously, check the oil level in the Power Steering reservoir, bet it's low (The noise is the pump beating itself to death trying to pump air/oil mix) Then check the pipework and rack for leaks. Mine sprang a leak from the cooling pipe in front of the radiator, a sod to find. Replaced from a scrappy for a tenner and that sorted it.

Still get the whining when the left hand seat is occupied tho.....wonder what the fix for that is????

it's your rear diff the reason it doesn't do it the next day is cause the oil has settled.

nope its the power steering, mine done this only done it under cornering then after 6 months got worse and louder, power pump has rubber seals under the tank and they are a common problem. look for fluid spilt on the engine.

check for leaks in the system then top her up, bet that'll sort her out
