Default Running Rich or Lean

So...how can you tell normally if your car is running rich or lean? I'm fairly certain my car runs rich. There's usually a fuely smell in the cabin, especially after filling up, but in case i'm wrong what are the symptoms of both and are there any quick fixes to solve the problem?

Snazzy, what model scoob are you running?
Do you have a replacement fuel pump ... something like a Walbro? There is a plate behind the back seat, where the fuel pump is placed in the tank ... if the gasket on that is shot or not properly fitted, you will smell fuel for sure.

I've got a 1993 JDM wrx, all stock except for an exhaust I believe, bought it used, not in great shape, but i'm kinda glad I got a beater as I've been wanting to teach myself cars anyways. And no, I don't have a replacement fuel pump, I won't be trying to get big numbers out of it, I like it stock for now as it's my first scoob. I'll see if I can find the plate over the pump though, should i be able to reach it through the boot?
