Angry Crankshaft oil seal gone again after 40 miles

JDM 2001 Bugeye STI remapped to 340/340 by Andy F

Right................mate bought the car with 60k miles and immaculate.

On his way home from buying the car, smoke and oil.......

On inspection and reading up on here the finger pointed towards the crankshaft oil seal. The job was then sorted by a local mechanic.

After 40 miles same thing again. Oil dripping from the same area

Mate spoke with mechanic that says he replaced the 'coil seal' (wtf is a coil seal) No mention of crankshaft seal!

Am I right in thinking that when replacing the crankshaft oil seal the oil pump seal should also be changed?

Also, the mechanic has said 'there could be a build up of pressure that is causing the seal to go'

Any ideas please?

You would need a massive amount of crankcase pressure to blow the rear main oil seal out,so unlikely unless the engine is kippered.
It's possible that the seal has not been fitted correctly when replaced.
Could be the Oil Seperator Plate(next to the rear main oil seal) leaking.
Possible that the crank main bearing thrusts are worn and working the seal out of place, but this normally shows up as the cam belt timing pulley wearing through the oil pump and center outer timing cover first.
There is no need to change rear main and oil pump seal as a pair unless both are leaking.

Thanks. Ever heard of the coil seal?

Think its a female contraceptive

Oil seals do have a "coil" on the back of the sealing lip to maintain contact with the rotating shaft.
Prob just the mechanics terminology of the Rear Main Oil Seal.

sounds more like it was the front seal that was leaking if so did your mechanic check the oil pump back plate retaining screws to make sure they where tight ?

can be caused by the relief valve for the oil pump sticking and holding too much pressure??

Would that cause too much pressure in the engine causing the seal to blow?
Surely there would be other tell tale signs of the oil leaking from an easier route if that were the case?

What ever the case.........would you advise taking the car back to have the seals re-done, or try to establish what has caused the leak in the first place.
There must be a logical explanation?

Had a similar problem on my JDM WRX turned out to be the crank was slightly out of line. Would get that checked out asap.
