97 type-r engine knocking????
Please help I have a 97 WRX Type-r and today it died!!! Drive along when a funny noise started coming from the engine. When the car slowed it stalled and wouldn't turn over. It was left 4 2hrs and when we came back it turned over, made a popping sound then started. It sounds ok on tick over but when you rev it above 2000 rpm, theres a harsh knocking sound coming from under the inlet manifold area of the engine. Its using lots of oil too, any ideas peeps?? Could it be a dropped valve??? Hope someone can shed some light......CB

shells and con rods elongate and slap of crank...not nice.. plentiful in the years of 96-98..unfortunately...mate on the uklegacy.com forum has one for sale...280+ delivery...i would rip his arm off for it if i were you.. its terminal for the bottom end..
CB - Sounds like bottom end failure/oil starvation if it initially locked up.

sorry fella. again sounds like your big ends are going. ££ time unfortunatley
if the knocking gets louder the higher the revs, defo the bottom end. as chris said its a metalically sound, have experience of this on my old wrx.
can i ask what fuel you have been using as the cars an import.

When mine went, thought it was the end of the car!!!!
Went to Scoobyclinic, it was diagnosed and various options were layed out in front of me, I went for 2.5 bottom rebuild. Haven't looked back, its like a brand new driving experience.
Have a word with the lads at Scoobyclinic T:01246 590807, they'll be able to diagnose for sure and give you your options.
Trust me its not the end of the world, don't panic!!!

dont think its the crank as mine dropped a piston the other day and that was using loads of oil then suddenly died on me and took 3 hrs to start again. mine rattles under manifold on pot 3 near turbo. also puffs smoke out of dipstick pipe with back pressure , any more info ring me on 07849776010 lee
