my cars a p1, had a decat, the problem i have is the tickover is iratic, and seems to be using too much fuel, replaced the maf a couple of weeks ago, disconnected the battery for most of the day, but still the problem is there, done the same today, but the cars even worse, might need a bit more time, but not sure yet, any advice would be helpfull, thanks, Mem

Question

Hope you've had it remapped, otherwise a full decat on a P1 and you're living on borrowed time
If you haven't had it mapped, don't boot it, use only v power and ideally (NF race) octane booster until you get it done.

If you have ...thrape it

Don't listen to your friend or put the cat back on. The P1 runs a JDM Sti ecu which was originally designed for 100 octane Japanese fuel. It was fiddled with slightly but not very successfully to try to make it ok for lower quality UK fuel, but decatting it allows a lot more air to flow and the ecu only has a limited ability to add in more fuel. There are two particularly "thin" areas in the rev range where extra air being introduced can make it run too lean, get too hot, and get knock which ultimately can lead to the engine going pop. A remap will cover over those areas with extra fuel to get back to the right air fuel mix (which will also make it smoother).

I have a P1 that had an ecutek remap by Bob Rawle after decatting, but also ran a knocklink, a 3 port boost solenoid and an uprated fuel pump. The ramp took the car up from the standard 276bhp to around 320bhp and made it smoother and probably safer than it's original state in terms of the map being set exactly for that specific car rather than for the lowest common denominator.
If you do get it mapped get it mapped by Bob or someone else who really knows p1's i.e. not your mate who clearly isn't up to speed. Bob always gets my vote - he's recently mapped my new engine on Motec in the P1 but that's now a daft 450bhp RCMS engine so normal rules don't apply

cheers for that, put the cat back on today, and the car seems much better, tickover, and driving seems better, it feels a bit quicker too, use 99 fuel! not sure if you mean it'll go pop, will it still go bang even tho i've reverted back to a cat? it did about a year ago, and i put ACL racing bearings in hoping this will cure it as it's done three engines so far

a remap would have cost a quarter of what it cost to do 3 rebuilds!

Definitely if you've done three engines :eek - a map with Bob (based in Swindon but well worth the trip) is something like 700quid - he will tell you what else you should fit as well like a better fuel pump ( easy to do) for more reliable fuel pressure, knocklink so you get some warning if it's detting and he'll be able to tell you if the engine's iffy or not once he's all plugged in.

Email him first and he'll talk you through all this in a far more expert way rbr@brdevelopments.com

If you've put the cat back on then it should be Ok but if you're not sure don't spank it and run as high a octane petrol as you can until someone has had a proper look at it
