Default Power FC tuning

I´m going to tune the Apexi Power FC on the road with Datalogit, Laptop and Widebandlambda.
Now I read my ignitonmaps and everything out of the Power Fc to the Laptop and had to see, that there are starting values of 14,81 and max. number of 9,38 on top of the table in my Inj Map. Ingition starts at 17 and comes over to 40 and end´s up on top at 15.
Is this good, I think the ignition when cold should be about 42 isn´t it?
With number of 17 it sometime does not take the gas when cold... is this a hiint that something is wrong?

Does anyone have tables of useable AF ratio numbers?
Maybe it helps if I load up the copied Excelsheet?

I´m not finished with my work for now, just driving the car with this map and some minor changes have to be taken, like Q45 Maf and bigger injectors.
Just do not know how to tell the Power FC about the Q45...

Any help would be great, many thanks in advance!

Although it is not Subaru specific, the thread sticky at the top of the page (see link) has some useful info on Power FC tuning. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the link, I will read through it!
Hopefully it is compareable with our Scoobys!

And regarding the MAF, I only have these options:

1.) GC8
2.) Super
3.) 80, VG30
4.) Option
5.) Option

Many thanks for your help!

Any idea?
I had time to log my data yesterday and they seem to be anywhere in my opinion!
Please take a look.

Please ignore the 100% of injectorduty, as they are not set correct due to not knowing the latencity and the pulsetime of the US STI sidefeed injectors (told they are 550s and seem to flow more fuel than the 440s to!).

I only want to know what AFRs I should hunt.
Might it be wise to up the boost a bit, as the closed deck EJ22 with STI V5/6 heads can take far more boost I think!
Have to wait for the injectors to come and set with the printout of the machineshop and build in the Q45 MAF, but then I have the problem as I wrote before, do not know what to set the MAF at!

Please let me know what you think!

This is how i tuned my afr on my 99 uk turbo (power fc, td05 16g, filter etc)

( Please note, different cars will vary and i wont be held responsible for you blowing your car up!!!! - this is just how i tuned MY uk turbo car )

AFR down to 11.5 : 1 on boost buildup (upto 3500 rpm)
dropping to 11 : 1 on full boost upto 5500 rpm
then after 5500 rpm I dropped the afr to 10.5:1

You are running very rich between 4000-5500 rpm, at some point its in the 9's!

Be careful though, do the changes in very small increments and do another run each time you adjust, monitoring knock closely. Ideally you should listen for knock (headphones) too.

I run IGN 16/17 on full boost/torque rpm (Uk internals)
Boost max is 19 psi on my TD05 16g, what turbo are you running ?

My Commander does not show any more knock than 12 and my knocklink will only light up the 2nd green light when floored to redline.

I hope that helps.

DISCLAIMER: I am no expert here, just an enthusiast who has done a bit of reading.

Firstly, i would get your injector and MAF scaling sorted before anything else, otherwise you will be chasing your tail trying to get your AFR's right. It would also be useful if you posted your fueling map.

At low load sites you want to keep the AFR close to 14.7 to keep fuel economy good.
As loads and revs increase richen up the map from about AFR 13.0 to about 10.5 / 11.0.
You'll want to keep an eye on you EGT's too.
Once you are happy with your AFR's being correct, then start making small changes to your boost and Ign Adv. Make sure you are monitoring for det, preferably with some detcans.

Hopefully one of the experts will jump on here and give you some advice too.

Edited to add: I've just seen AL99's post (he got in before me) ... so sorry for any duplication.

@AL99: Thanks for your point of view, that was what I thought as well, it should not be more than 10.5 I think on full load and full boost.

My EJ22 has got fully forged internals and the turbo is a SR40 at the moment, looking to use the SR55 as it´s lying on my shelf.
Let´s see.

@STIfreak: I think so too, just wanted to learn on the setup now, until the injectors turn up and I know how to setup the Q45 MAF!

I will look for a detcan!
But I think the knocklogging of the PFC will work quite good isn´t it?

Knock on the power fc is pretty good yes and with datalogit makes for a nice easy system. I use a knocklink (pin 5 from the internal IC (LM3916) iirc ) wired up to my Innovate LMA-3 but its all pretty much the same. Although i might try the datalogit system for my next run of mods.

SR40, nice turbo that. Will be good to see what you finally get bhp/torque wise from that turbo (ive considered this myself). If it were me i would run more boost, but i would check the compressor maps and see what is safe boost level for the mid and high rpm range.
I have to tail my boost down to around 16psi at 6500 rpm on my 16g, it can do more, but its not worth the extra demand from the turbo for little gain.

I think it is possible to wire and log the EGTemps as well, isn´t it?!
That would show a critical value as well in the logs and would be helpful as well!

Yes the SR40 pulls hard from 2500 onwards even in "this state of tune"!
But it is an EJ22T hybrid to remember not on an EJ20T.
The turbo will take much more boost of course!
I will up the boost in the middle and see what numbers I will get.
Due to running very rich in this area there can´t be any problem I think!

An additional question, is it possible to connect the EGT gauge to the Apexi or have it to be programmed as the LM-1 has to?

If you email me your map I will have a look at the MAF tables and should be able to get you in the ball park.....

Alan is very busy over the days, so I have to ask again if anybody can tel me how to setup the Q45 MAF.
I also heard that there are different Q45 MAFs... I think I have the smaller one...

And is there any possibility to hook up the EGT gauge?

Seeing knowlevels of 20 at full load and 1,5bar of boost AFR about 10,5 to 11,0 are these numbers on the save side?

Hi!

As I told you there are 2 different Q45 MAFs:

22680-31U00 pink label
22680-61U00 yellow label

here you can find some Info about the Nissan MAFs..

Just check your part number!
Afms Faq - SilviaWA Forums

EGT shouldn't be over 800°C! The sensor is mostly fitted in the headers below 3rd cylinder - don't know if this is really right.. I read that on NASIOC forums

It is if measured just after cyl 3.

Regarding MAFs the PFC needs a rescale for the Q45. I was told option 5 is best fit, but purely as a frig to get the car running.

Okay so in the Uppipe it might be around 900°C right?!
Sorry for my poor question, but which one is the 3rd cylinder, if I decide to drill a hole into the header near there?

How may I scale the MAF myself, is there a do it yourself instruction anywhere or maybe some Nissanguys have the numbers?

3rd cylinder is the one next to the turbo!
3 4

when you stand in front of the Scooby!
don't know if the 800°C are high!?

EGT @ uppipe will be a bit lower I think!

Best will be to contact a tuner what EGT they have on their cars..

does anyone know the max. exhaust gas temperature??

I run 1.45 bar on an MY98 WRX and have knock of around 14 at WOT.

Normal running is around 8-9 on the commander.

My AFR is 11.8 at 3300rpm and then going to 11.2 at 6.5k

You need to determine what the normal knock is for your engine as a guide.

Wayne.

That´s okay no need to as my AFRs are high enough anyways and can be much less fuel, so the injector duty will be lower of course.
Bigger Injectors are on their way anyways!

How can I install an airtemp sensor with the Apexi?
Is the LM1 able to use both AFR and Airtemp sensor at the same time to wire it into the Datalogit?

Help needed!
I found the following on eBay:
eBay Motors: AEM Air Inlet Temperature Temp Sensor Kit AIT (item 360052607751 end time May-24-08 23:46:50 PDT)

What year car is yours? I have done this with my apexi PFC and you basically have a sensor with a wire to ground and then the other wire goes to the ecu. My 98 ECU has a spare slot for the wire, but no internal connector.

Just so you know, I get absolutely no benefit from it whatsoever. The only thing it can do is retard the ignition if the air temp is sky high.

Wayne.

That´s what I want to do, in case of dragracing in the summer...
But anyways it´s of any good to see how high the chargetemp will rise before and after an intercoolerswap!
If the Apexi can read these numbers it would be great, going to read the thread, thanks for that!

Is the Power FC able to use the inletairtempsensor for ignitioncorrection?

And please let me know more knocklevels you have got at WOT!

I got a max of 12 at 1,65bar, but then the boost tappers down to about 1bar after 5000rpm...
I run 10,8 AFR at this load of 1.65bar and 4500-5500rpm.

Normal knock at cruisingspeed is 0-3.
Looking to get 14,7 at normal cruising around 40mph.
Up at 80mph I look to get 14,2-14,4, I think this is a save level, isn´t it?!

What ignitionlevels do you have set after 5000rpm?
