There is no comparison the GEMS ecu is a horrible ecu for a road car in my experience on a MY99 STI 5!

GEMS is more motorsport-based.

GEMS is OK except for 97/98 (V3/4) which is missing a lot of features of the 92-96 and 99->on variants.

cold start issues are more down to mapper than a GEMS inherent fault...............our rally car stands for months at a time and fires first click every time

Thats exactly what i heard and read, the cold start and idle issues are normally down to the mapping.

Gems doesn't have cold start issues as such... its mainly down to the mapper...
My old Type R used to run Gems, that did have cold start issues... but once mapped by another mapper, with a few cold starts under its belt... the Gems was perfect on cold start...
I did however change the ecu, went for a Adaptronics unit... as mentioned above, Gems is a rally based ecu... can be alittle on/off...
