Default Classic running poorly, MAF?

I have been having some trouble with my car and since the fault is intermittent it has been hard to track down.
The car with sometimes loose power while driving, not at any particular time like in a certain gear or accelerating etc and throws out a load of black smoke.
ECU shows no fault codes and the diagnositics (when it was tested) showed nothing BUT the MAF looks like it has been played with (top removed and stuck back down with white silicone) so that seems like a good place to start, so I am told.
Problem is I cannot track down one like I have on my car to replace it. It has a blue label and R80 at the end of the long code on the side of it.

Does anyone know of a way to find out what MAF SHOULD Be on my car, via the chassis code maybe, to make sure I have the right one fitted, and also where I can try to see if they have one in stock?

Sorry for the long post, I hope it makes sense

purple MAF number is- A36-613 R80

this is the correct MAF for your car, you are lucky as this MAF was also fitted to the uk impreza turbo from 97-98.

if you get stuck you should be able to get this from a dealer, you will need a chassis number from a 97/98 uk car though as most dealers won't sell you parts for an import.

if you need a chassis number for a uk car just PM me and i will get you one.

If i replace the MAF do I have to have anything changed on the ecu, like a reset or something?
Also can I be 100% sure that my car comes with a purple label MAF and its not one that was just put on by some cowboys who didn't know what they were doing before I bought the car?

best to disconnect the battery for around half an hour when you change it as the ecu will be reset and all fault codes will be lost.

every wrx wagon of 97/98 vintage i have seen has had the purple lable maf the same as the uk saloon and wagon (wrx saloon has orange lable)

when you said it was a blue label it got my attention as i have never seen a blue label maf on a subaru

when i looked at the one on my car (98 uk turbo) i can see why you thought it was dark blue

you can be 110% sure

borat52- there are a few green ones (92-96) for sale on ebay at the moment, they are pretty hardy and i have only ever seen 1 green label go wrong over the last 5+ years i have been involved with subarus.
