MY93 WRX, yours should be similar...

This is the sensor installed - hidden under the inlet manifold:

General view:

The new sensor is sat in the tool tray, er, intercooler.

When removing the old sensor, be prepared for some water to spill out. You may want to syphon out some water from the header tank to reduce the spillage on top of the engine. The sensor is a bit of a pain to fit - you have to fit it blind. Also, try not to drop the sensor while fitting otherwise it can take a while to find / retrieve it!

As DaveD posted :
Follow you top hose back to the engine - it fits onto the coolant cross over
pipe/casting.
The coolant temp sensor is mounted on the back of the coolant X over on the MY96 and you will prob.need a torch to see it.

just when you change yours stick some rag in the turbo inlet rather than leaving it open to dropped tools, dirt etc

That's what the tissue on the intercooler was for!
