Engine has gone bang! Do i scrap or repair?
I'm looking for as many helpful suggestions/advice as i can get.
I took my car to a Subaru specialist at the end of last week because it had started to smoke and use oil at a alarming rate, he had a quick look under the bonnet and noticed it had - belive it or not - a legacy single turbo full engine fitted instead of the STI Type RA that should have been there. The **** that had done this had fitted the correct VF23 turbo and intercooler and everything else that had made it a STI RA engine except of course the block, block internals and heads.
The specialist has given me a rough ball-park figure of £2k to source, inspect and fit the appropriate engine....
So i suppose what i what to know is what is a 96 STI Type RA worth with a blown legacy engine? Does anyone know of a subaru breaker that might be interested and how much it might be worth - i ask as i simply just do not have the time to break it myself. I'm in Northamptonshire.
I'm trying to work out whether it would be cheaper to repair or cut my losses and sell...
Apologies for all the questions in this post, but any advice really will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Russ

you could build fresh to a high standard for 2k, forged pistons, rods, new crank and bearing etc and it would then be better than new/original by quite some margin if you ask me

I've been told there's no point rebuilding this engine/block as the legacy heads are different to the STI's and the block is next to useless. Thanks anyway

Hi,
Always a difficult choice this one , Whats is the condition of the rest of the car ? has the suspention or brakes had money spent ?
If you have a good tidy car then why not take some time and of course money a build yourself something really sorted !!! however if she is a bit rough then maybe time to let it go , however if you cant break her yourself you will not see to much back moneywise.
Dont worry though your not the first to get a little burnt ! cars , bikes , women all cost a fortune !!! still what else would we do Eh !!!
Regards Matt

If the Leggy engine has 2 bolt coil packs holes on the Rocker covers - then its no use for an Impreza.
Heads,Pistons and Turbo are different and bores tend to suffer with ovality.

It definately does have the 2 x 4 bolt holes on the heads, and the engine was fitted with the VF23 turbo, so that with the sti ra fueling and rev range i'm surprised the engine lasted the year i've owned it. I've decided i'm going to go down the replacement engine route though.
Thanks for your thoughts. It will be hopefully be repaired and back to it's former RA glorywithin 3 weeks (It's always a good sign that he's that busy). I'll keep you guys posted with the results.
