Default Timing Belt - Do years matter ?

Hi all,

Got a JDM spec STi7. I don't have a bug eye service book just one of the pre-bugeye and looking in it it just says 100kms for timing / cam belt change but nothing on years. I would imagine that only the kms / miles matter since the cam belt is sealed in so length of time (ie: it's 7 years old) doesn't really matter since it's not exposed to the elements ?

Car is a MY2001 and has roughly 75kms on the tach.

Thoughts.

Cheers

I strongly agree with 'stotty1' years do matter. Rubber perishes with age and a timing belt will deteriorate over time. The fact it's covered is also a factor as you can't easily see it to check its condition. I had mine changed at 45K service and another at 64K as my crank seal had gone! Its not that expensive or that difficult, although I let my local Jap specialist do it

Thanks for the reply.

Can I have a couple more opinions please.....anyone have a JDM STi7 service manual, what does it say, just 100kms or does it give years as well ?

Cheers

Thanks for the reply.

Just need a person with an actual manual in front of them to reply now.

Cheers

Hi Razor

My 01 bugeye wrx parallel import service book states 36 months for 75km and 48 months for 100km, had my cam belt changed at 50k miles which came up october last year.

Timing belts aren't something you want to skimp on really, for the price involved in changing it versus the cost if it breaks, it's a no brainer!

If you can't be certain of when the belt was last changed, I'd deffo have it changed and then follow the recommendations of the manufacturer after that.

Oh, as for your question, time certainly [i]does] matter!

Sod the book !
Any oil will kill it, at the very least take the covers off and have a good look.
A new belt is way cheaper than a new engine....

P.S. Having said that, my tame expert told me five years and (31000 miles) was pushing it for mine. But I'm old and don't use the last 1500 rpm often....
