Default STi7 Clonking / Knocking from Steering / Suspension ?

When I turn right at very slow speeds I can hear and feel a slight knock from the offside front area.. It doesn't seem to get any faster as I accelerate. I can't say exactly where it is coming from, it could be the wheel, it could be the top mount. Anyhoo, it's starting to get on my pip.. I have had the wheel off, and all the ARB mounts, Calipers, bottom joints all seemed plenty tight, and the pads don't appear loose. Any ideas what this could be, and how to check it ?

I have checked the wheel bearing, and that also seems nice and tight.

There is some loose trim under the car, I am going to order some clips to sort that today.. would be nice if that was the problem, but I don't think it is..

Cheers,

I get this on my MY96, especially when reversing and turning. I think it could be the steering rack bushed so check these out.

neither really.. have read quite a few threads about that, but most seem to be about the rear.. the noise on mine is coming from the front.

Thanks anyhow though, will have a trawl through them later !

I'd hazard a guess its the wheel bearing. There wont be any play at all if its just jacked up as the driveshaft nut is holding it all nice and tight. Loosen the nut on the end of the shaft 3 or 4 turns and then check for play in the bearing. Took me months to figure on mine it was the bearing.

I have this on mine at present thanks to Rally GB off road parking. I have AST adjustable coilovers on mine though.

My problem is the top mount. I am off to see Curtis at Powerstation in the next week or so for a o/s/f re-build.

Hmm, hadn't thought of that... well worth a look, thanks !

I keep thinking the noise is coming from the top mount.. not sure how to test it though ?

Occam's Razor: I'd start with the known issue of the rear struts. When I had this problem a couple of years ago, most of the time it did sound like it was coming from the front, not the rear. Is it worse when you are turning? That's a good clue that it's the struts, if it is.

what about a cv joint ??

surely loosening the nut to drive shaft will only loosen it and show play ??

out side of the box idea , engine mount/gearbox mount

Yeah, it is only when I am turning right at slow speed and it is coming from the front.. You can hear the noise coming from the front o/s if you bounce the car when its standing. There is no noise when turning left, going straight ahead or driving at normal road speeds.. just when creaping around car-parks etc..

out side of the box idea , engine mount/gearbox mount
How would I check these ??

keep the suggestions coming please !

on the mounts idea lift bonnet and get some one to try and pull away real slow so ya can see if theres any abnormal movement for engine mounts

for the gear box mount all i can surgest is maybe a jack under it and seeing if theres a lot of play when pumping the jack up

and just generally look at state of the rubbers etc to see if they look real old and wrinkerly

i know this a sligtly different noise placement

but i had a tick when pulling away some times and it ended up being the turbo cowl hitting the underside of the scoop a slight bend and it was never to return

it sounds like strut top mounts to me used to work for renault and the new meganes were always doing it. its muck gettin into the top mount bearings
try turning lock to lock when stand still
if one side is doing it then 9 times out of 10 the other side will do it a month or so down the line.

If its more of a creak then a knock it will be the wishbone mount, probably the the big one at the back. undo the bolt, take off the big washer, put plenty of grease on bush and refit the washer and nut. A knock would probably be the worn anti roll bar bushes. Or If youve got the older 2 pot front calipers, the slides wear, you can test for it by taking hold of the upper part of the caliper with your hand to see if there is excessive play. Had similar problems in the past! Glad to say its all sorted now!!

It could be worth checking the top mounts as they can crack

Mine did it n/s/f so stuck an Allen key in and tightened the nut.
Noise went away, now o/s/f is doing it....
But I need the rears doing as well !
With new top mounts probably too !

Just checked that, both tight though.. (or should I be loosening the locknut first) ?

If if bounce the car from the front wings the knock can be heard, although I think it is moreso of the O/S.. When I bounce the rears, it is silent..

Any other ideas ??
