Question

I've about 6 stone chips on the very front lip of my bonnet which are almost invisible when the bonnet is closed. One or two look like they're down to the metal and about to rust. I'm keen to repair but what's the best approach - does the whole bonnet need a respray in the future?

you lucky to only have 6, ive done 30k and mine is simply pebble dashed, mind you i got half of them playing with a cozzy at naughty speeds.

Im even considering a car bra or a big rally style sticker kit to hide/protect it.

As far as the MY01 WRX is concerned the bonnet is aluminium so rust shouldn't be a problem (small plus point?).

Haven't seen the paintwork on a previous shape scooby but my new shape does seem suffer from stone chips even from minor impacts.

The car has only done around 500 miles on the motorway, which is where my previous Escort gained most of its, and that was doing 20k miles a year. It certainly didn't pick up damage as quickly as the scooby.

If the stone chips continue at the rate they do then I will end up with a car that looks like it has bird sh*t permanently on the bonnet.

I haven't had anything go through the primer (yet).

I had a UK MY96 for three years, and had to have the bonnet and front spoiler resprayed before I sold it because there was so many stone chips. I then bought an STI5, and the paint quality is so much better - two years later there are no chips on the bonnet and just a couple on the spoiler.

Until I read this thread I thought this was just Subaru improving their paint processes over time, but now I wonder if they just do a cheap paint job on models for the UK market. Have other import owners had the same experience, or have I just been lucky?

Scud8,

I have the same car and the bonnet isn't chipped (33k) but the front spoiler is looking a little spotty. You want to do what I did. Some lady reversed into me in Waitrose carpark and will now be having the whole front of the car resprayed.

I guess there is a silver lining in unexpected places

Thanks Guys - a result. I called them at lunchtime - they arrived about 2pm - quote for £60 for the paint chips and £25 for the chips in the front screen - should all be complete whilst I'm at work on Fri pm.

Phil,

Am a little confused. Did you say "the chips in the front screen?" Do you mean chips in the windscreen I have a chip in the windscreen and being glass thought that the only solution is a new one??

Should I head for the Muppet forum

Chips in the windscreen can be fixed at any auto-glass shop, or at least they can be in Canada. It's a relatively cheap procedure and I can't even tell it was done.

Kingsize K2

Can you tell me the location of the Waitrose, the time the old lady does her shopping, and the make, model, colour and registration number of her car .

I've had the same experience twice now, except that the end result was a scraped rear bumper and those responsible didn't own up. The second one happened less than three months after I had the bumper resprayed .

She had a right go at me!!! Making a mountain out of a molehill etc.

The car is immaculate "aside" from two penny size black marks on my otherwise silver front bumper!

The fact she had no driver side rear view mirror (smashed!) and her rear defrost was f*cked as well bI think may help my case

PS It was a lovely 309 Look by the way. Quick as hell that thing

Kingsize

I mean't the windscreen - they can fix certain chips in the glass - it depends on the depth I think.
