Default Rattling Impreza!!!

I have a 1994 Impreza turbo and am getting a rattling sound coming from the engine at about 2500 revs, also it seems to of lost some performance, its still hitting 1.1 bar but seems a bit sluggish and get the odd smell of fuel from time to time, Could it be leaking headers/upipe or are the 2 things un-related

Is the rattling coming from the engine bay, assuming it is and at 2.5k revs sounds like the heatshield, try a search on heatchields, they crack (you usually cannot see the crack) and make a rattling noise at around 3k revs. This would not normally affect the performance though...

Otherwise not too sure, have you had/done any work on the car recently?

The up-pie to the turbo could be broken inside. Ive seen this on a few Imprezas with only a very slight blowout

Like Paul said, on my previous 2 scoobs I got a rattle between 2-3k and it drove me mad. I did realise that it was the manifold heatshield and cut it off in both instances. No idea about performance issues though.

The boost control solenoid can also make a noise that sounds like a rattle if the rubber mounting bushes have gone hard

Another vote for the split/loose manifold heatshield. Mine rattled until I got a new set of headers. Noise then vanished.

hmm might just cut the heatshield off then. Will this effect performance in anyway having no heatshield????

You probably won't actually have to cut it off, it may well unbolt. I only ever actually had to cut a small section of it where a probe passed through it on older models if memory serves. As for the 'performance' bit, I have to say that I never thought of it as a performance altering part but no doubt there is some techno geek science along the lines of it reflecting the heat back on to the pipes, heating them up more and causing further acceleration of the gases as they exit the block etc . I only ever though of protecting against sudden temp changes as in puddles etc, no clue tbh .
