draining coolant
#2
Take the bottom hose off and drain. Refit and fill with neat antifreeze first, then water. Can't remember the quantity for 2 litre impreza, about 3 litres I think. Then top up with water. This can take ages!! Run to temperature, check and recheck.
Always check level again from cold next morning.

The book says 7.2 litres for a UK Turbo. However in my experience you'll never get that much in 'cos there's always some left in there somewhere no matter how long you drain. As Shark says, drain as much as possible, ie 'til it's only dripping, then put the antifreeze in first and top up with water. At least it will be stronger than recommended if it doesn't all go in. You'll need a 50% solution, so just over 3½ litres of good antifreeze (I used Halfords Professional 'cos its a pretty colour).

is there any taps at the highest point in the system to let the air out when the coolant goes in? (to prevent air locks like the old 5GT turbo's).

There is a drain **** on the bottom left of the rad looking from in front of the car. I wouldn't bother using it unless you want to reuse the coolant, it doesn't flow at all well.

Just done mine. Used the tap at the bottom left of the radiator to drain. Also disconnected the small hose at the top right of the radiator from the pipe running along the top of the radiator to empty the overflow (and hence empty the bit where you would normally top up coolant, on the front far right of the engine bay.)
(The Porter book mentions a couple of drain plugs on the bottom of the engine block, one near the oil filter, but I couldn't see one, and don't think I would fancy disturbing it if I did!) They say you shouldn't mix different types of antifreeze, so I refilled it with straight water and ran the engine for a couple of minutes and drained it again, twice. i.e. three drains in total!
Left it to drain for quite a while and got about 6 litres in (50% water, 50% antifreeze).

Robs, I'd have been inclined to put 3.6 litres antifreeze in irrespective of the water since you would have flushed/diluted the system with clean water and the total book capacity is 7.2 litres.

Pull the bottom hose & the top hose, then put a hose pipe in the top hose & flush the crap out of the rad you'll be suprised how much crap is in there, if you are feeling brave remove the thermostat Stick the hose pipe in there & fluch the engine out as well.

I used the drain plug on the rad. Removed the drain plug and the resovoir cap, then helped it out by squeezing the top and bottom hoses.
Got over 6 litres out, and got the same amount back in again. Also squeezed the top and bottom hoses to help get the air out of the system.
