Default Up Pipe for Classic WRX

Can anybody tell me what purpose an up pipe serves and what benefits are to be gained by putting an aftermarket up pipe on if any? Apart from it looking pretty??

Cheers

Dave

The Up-pipe goes between your headers & your turbo.

The bore of the up-pipe will affect how quickly to turbo will start to spool and generate boost.

You only need to change it for big HP conversions.

The OE uppipe is not of particularly good design and is a restriction to gas flow because of the manner of construction. A properly designed uppipe will improve your spool and add to your ultimate performance.
With ported headers and a purpose designed and matched uppipe you will gain a noticable improvement in spool and torque across the rev range.

I would PM Harvey about one of his up pipes and header kits. The problem with up pipes, the after market ones, is that if the diameter is not matched to the headers and turbo spec, the performance can be hindered. Harvey will tell you more.

If you access to a ramp there is no need to remove the turbo. I did mine in about 1 hour, you need a few ext bars and a windy helps but not needed if you don't have one. The hardest part was removing the OE one once it was unbolted as its quite tight, I removed the bottom engine mount bolt and lifted the engine a bit to slide it out.

I bought mine off harvey, had no problems with it since fitting.

I had to replace mine as it was split / blowing. I noticed no difference with the aftermarket one fitted.

The garage I took it to charged 10hrs labour and told me a took them longer than that. They had the car for 4 days.
I knew I'd been had and posted here asking for advice. Most of the responders said the treatment I had was reasonable

Changing headers and up-pipe generally takes two if all goes well and three hours if there are problems to overcome.
This assumes a ramp, air tools and long extention bars which obviate the need to remove the turbo.

Any garage charging for 10 hours either doesn't have the right tools or know what they are doing or both, or of course having you over big style.
