Default Wild service quotes !!

Hi,

Recently got a 97 import wrx with 95k miles on the clock, cam belt was last done 30k miles ago so I would like to change it and get a full service ...

I have been getting some very wildly different quotes; (this is for a full service, cam belt and all tensioners, etc)

Subaru - £700+

Local Garage 1- £300ish but doubt they have a clue or any diagnostic tools
Local Garage 2- £230 but bound to be even worse right ?

Local Import Garage - £1000 but it looks to be an real specialist place

Scooby Place but 400 miles away - £450 scoobybits or something, looks to be a specialist

Anyway, why is it so different, I dont know whether to trust the specialists and pay a grand on basically £3,500 car or would my local guy at reasonable money be able to do it properly ???

Any experience of this ?

Well in my experience of servicing / maintenance costs, you DON'T always get what you pay for. Hence why I don't trust anyone with my car and do all the work myself unless it involves the gearbox.

If you trust the local garage then use them - its only a service, so no diagnostics required. I'd only take it to a specialist if I had a problem with it...

Timing belt is best left to someone who knows what they're doing.

Don't know where you are based, but try Len at Subaru4you, based in Newbury. Great guy and top work. Check out this link for their servicing costs etc - regardless of your location, these are resoanble prices for good work and shoud be a good guide for you.
Subaru4you - servicing your Subaru

Also chek the rest of this website for reviews on any company you are referred to. And try the forums for the local subaru enthusiast clubs on the forum page - offers a bit more of a local slant. It took me a while to find someone I am comfortable with, and I simply checked out any referrals on this site first before committing. There is heaps of knowledge and experience on here so you shoud be able to find what you want with a bit of digging.

Let your fingers do the walking as they say.

Hear hear, I second that. A mate of mine has taken his to various back street garages and has had nothing but problems. As already said, if you can't do it yourself get some recommendations from people who live local, I'm sure there will be some on here if you ask.

This is much appreciated guys,

I am based in Cambridge so any local Scooby owners that can suggest a decent and fair priced garage, who actually know what they are doing, fire away!!! will try the local forums, cheers for the advice.

Rustle, I think the last owner took it to Subaru4you according to receipts, and yes looks fairly priced, bit far from me but better option than letting a cow boy loose on it.

I have decided against the local garage offering to do it for approx £300, as I called subaru parts and was quoted over this for belts, tensioners, etc. so to do the job, this local guy would be using crap bits or making a loss, doesnt make sense ....

planning to visit this local import centre soon, based near an airfield called Wyton if anyone has ever been there,

Thanks for all the suggestions,
