If it's Value for Money your after then Wiseco Pistons are the best buy, will reliably handle 500 bhp on 2.0l or 2.5l.

My new forged block has arrived from America with Wiseco pistons, and the company that sold it has rated the Short block to 650 bhp.

There will various differences between pistons makes, but understandably, owners will recommend what they have, suppliers will recommend what they sell.

In general terms, all of the well known manufacturers will make a good piston, but where some just copy the original, others will take the original, and improve it.

This will be to make it stronger, lighter, more suitable for different head combinations (EG: 2.0lt head, on 2.5lt engine) & then higher, or lower compression, depending on the application.

Firstly there are different materials. Mahle for example use a "high silicon content" alloy, for their PowerPak range, which is a cheaper material than they use for their custom pistons, which is a high quality "low silicon content" alloy, the same material used by most of the other manufacturers for their standard range.

"LSC" allow is stronger than "HSC" alloy, but the "HSC" version expands less, and is supposed to be quieter.

That said, I know that Mahle recommend the same clearances as say, Wiseco, so any piston noise would be pretty much the same.

Next there is piston design. This will start with the design of the forging used, then the length, and shape of the skirt, the taper, taper break point, pin off set, dish size, & design, and a few more too !!!

Personally, I use Wiseco, but then all the pistons I sell are Lateral designs, which have proven to be very strong, reliable, and give very good results, such as Andy F's, and the Zen cars, amongst many others
