Default Tell-tale signs of engine knackared??

As title says really! Im after knowing how to tell what is wrong with an engine (top end/bottom end/turbo gone) and what components will be fuc*ed. Are there any definitive or obvious, tell-tale signs of each different part of the engine going i.e. Blue/white/black smoke and when it occurs, mayo in the oil cap for headgasket, etc,etc.....

Any info much appreciated!

Well, I suppose there are; but I was just trying to get a general idea for future reference!

The symptoms are, starts up first time, with a bit of white steam appearing for a few minutes (I think this is just narmal for any car this time of year). Then on idle doesn't really smoke atall I dont think. When driving, I cant seem to see any smoke on/off boost or on the over-run. But then when you stop after driving for a bit; after about 2-3 minutes of idling a bit of blue smoke is coming out. If you rev it when it does this; more comes out. Once you start driving, it goes again!

Also, there is a slight tapping noise coming from the engine when it warmed up also; but it does not seem to to do it when cold.

No mayo in the oil filler cap and I dont think it is loosing any oil or water.

Ive been told (and am hoping!) its the oil seals in the turbo; but just need to make sure before I go ahead and buy a turbo!! I was thinking about getting it compression tested just to make sure the rings/pistons are ok??

Cheers

if its an earlier car then these are a bit noisy, a compression test would be a good starting point to be honest though and that would give a better picture (leaking valves, worn rings etc)

Yeah it is an earlier car. Must admit, ive heard my mates and that seemed to tap a little aswell, so im not really worried about that. Its more the smoke thats bothering me.

Yeah, gunna get that done and go from there.

Blue smoke can be oil burning, but this can be caused by a number of things:

worn rings - you would normally lose some compression too if the rings are worn, a compression test should be done;

worn valve stem oil seals - the seals on the stems can become hard and brittle with age resulting in a loss of seal. Oil can leak through, down the valve stem and into the combustion chamber. I don't know how common this is on scoobies, don't recall ever reading a thread that mentions it, but am sure someone who builds engines regularly will be able to tell you.

worn turbo oil seals - if the seals wear then you can get oil leaking through and being burnt by the hot exhaust side. If they go big time then you can lose quite a bit of oil quickly, although you would also get a lot of smoke.

You would normally use some oil if it was burning though. It may be something else.

If you don't know how to track it down for certain then take it to someone who does. Even if they charge you a few quid for diagnosis, it may save you spending out on a part that doesn't fix the problem.

sounds like turbo seals gone or valve stem oil seals.

But if it were Valve stem oil seals, wouldn't it put out blue smoke all the time?

If it were to be those, how big'a job is it to get them replaced?

Spot on that anlysis tho, just what I was after!!

What else could it possibly be?

What are the ways to diagnose what the problem is? Im obviously gonna take it to my local performance garage; but wouldn't mind knowing how to have a go at diagnosing what it is myself!?

Cheers

To check if the turbo's passing oil just remove the hose off the intercooler side of the turbo and see if its covered in oil, a light film is acceptable but if its thick of oil chances are your turbo's on its way out

I spoke to Tony at UPAUTO's today about this and he also thinks its turbo oil seals.
Here's what he had to say -

sounds like your turbo seal is dying, however the only way to make sure is to check your turbo shaft.

The reason I don't think its anything to do with the engine is because if it is apiston ring gone then the smoke would come out constantly.
So i'll be off to do that tomorrow and take it from there. Just thought i'd post this up as i knew you was also looking for an answer.
