Default Fuel Pumps

Prior to going mad on any engine mods I'm going to get the basics sorted. High on the list is a fuel pump. I know the preferred option is the walbro 255, but I found this on ebay for half the price.

eBay.co.uk: FUEL PUMP Subaru WRX STi Impreza RS 255LPH (item 160090093481 end time 08-Mar-07 22:46:19 GMT)

It ticks all the right boxes in the text, but does anyone have any experience of them.

I wouldn't rate a genuine Walbro at anywhere near 600bhp, let alone a cheap Far East copy.

I don't intend going anywhere near 600bhp, it was more the flow rate I was looking at. The 255lph and the fact is was a complete kit for about half the price of a walbro, but unless someone has used them and can say they are good I'll work on the assumption you pay for what you get.

I've just cleared a couple of grand off so I'll get my exhaust and fuel pump. I've got a GGR induction kit in the garage and a large TMIC, so just need a TD05 and re-map and I'll be happy with that for now. Shold see me the right side of 300bhp...

The imported kits are ok for the later cars, but the filter is a bit short for pre' '01 cars.

The filter supplied with the UK kits sits about 1 1/2" lower in the tank.

I've just been offered a second hand but unused one, so I'll see what sort of price that'll be, if not I'll get that one you recommend

Just need to start getting things delivered to work so the wife doesn't realise I'm spending all this money 'On that bloody car again'

make sure you get the right one for the year of your car. The pumps are the same but the fitting kit is slightly different I think.

Thanks for the warning, the one I've been offered is off a newage, iirc the difference is between newage and classic but I stand to be corrected.

Yeah I think all the newage ones are the same from 01>06. Just make sure you seal the top correctly when replacing it, mine had a slight leak which I didn't notice till I filled the tank right up to the top. There's a really good tutorial thread with lots of pics on replacing the pump on here somewhere I seem to recall.

That's why you use the OE filter on a classic and this chaps after a newage one anyway.

I'd probably replace the gasket when I change the pump, that's what I've done in the past when I changed a fuel tank on an older car.

TurboXS do a good tutorial as well, I used the nice works colour printer to run off a copy, but iirc it was on their main web site as a part of the fitting instructions for stage 3 upgrade.

But that's only if you buy the wrong kit in the first place !

If you buy the correct kit, you get the correct filter, to fit with your nice new pump.

This would also save people the time, & hassle of cleaning the old filter, that could have been on the car for over 12 years.

But appreciate some people would rather clean, & use the old filter, to save the £3.75 difference in price.
