A failing lambda sensor will cause it to overfuel at idle as it'll read lean and so the ecu will add fuel to compensate, same in cruise when it's still running closed loop fuelling.

if it's just warming up, this is normal, car runs rich and the cat isnt heated up yet, it'll smell pretty 'fuelly' unless it's excessive.

What's 'tickover' mean ? does it mean idling ?

Is it a neat fuel smell in the car? or fuel from the exhaust?

Have you had a fuel pump changed recently or ppp fitted?
