Default 2.0L closed deck block options

Hi fellas,

I have just aquired a phase 1, 2.0L closed deck block for next to nothing.

Now I am weighing up my options as to what to do with it. I have the following questions.

1) What will I need to do to get my STI version 9 crank to fit?

2) Would I be able to use the rods (Eagle) that are currently in my Open deck 2.0L with a 2.5 crank and a re liner job with some 97mm pistons to get a 2.33?

3) Use my existing crank, existing rods, reliner it and get some 97 mm pistons for a strong 2.2?

4) Or shall I just use my STI ver9 crank(if it can be used), eagle rods, Wiseco 93mm forged pistons and keep it to 2.0L

any info or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Daz, speak to Mark at Lateral Performance or Alyn at AS Performance - I'm sure they can both arrange to have phase 1 cases machined to take end thrust bearings

And they will be able to discuss options for your components

Cheers mate, only 2 days to go for you. Remember I want lots of details as my own turbo decision depends on your results.

No pressure of course lol

LOL - If I were you I'd get the CDB bored and linered to 2.2l then go with a 2.5l crank, etc to go for 2.33 or whatever it is. I wouldn't waste your time and money on a 2 litre CDB - as your currentblock should be able to handle pretty much anything you can throw at it whilst maintaining a driveable 2 litre - ie 450bhp maybe up to 500bhp

I will give you the detils after Friday though - hopefully it is all good news and nothing along the lines of "I have blown up my gearbox"

Daz,

By the time you decide what to do, Subaru's will be eligible for the "London to Brighton" rally, but we'll all be living boats, due to global warming, and I will be drawing my pension

Terry, let me know how you get on.

I don't really see a great benefit Daz in the extra cost outlay over using your existing bottom end, that is of course unless your goalposts with BHP and lb/ft painted on them have mysteriously moved?

LOL at Mark a good point well made.

Paul, I am very tempted to keep it as it is and just stick one of Marks MD321T's on it. Infact that was my plan. Up until today atleast, I bought the CDB which is in fabulous condition for £50. So just exploring options.

Alot depends on Terry's results on Friday as I am very very tempted by this turbo.

ps. Terry where abouts are you from as I wouldn't mind a trip in the passenger seat to finally make my mind up.

But cheers for the advice guys I shall take it on board.

Daz - I am in Portsmouth - so a long way from you. I will be at Donington Park on Monday 5th March - you are more than welcome to come along and I will do my best to scare you to death by taking Craners flat in 5th (with 450bhp )

I would keep your CDB with a view to taking your mods to the stage after the 321T - this is my plan - nice big fookoff capacity CDB engine and rotated ***** furker of a turbo in 2008

Daz,

If you're not careful, that £50 is going to cost you THOUSANDS !!!

It's cheap enough that you can put it aside, and just use what you have, as let's be fair, it ain't exactly shabby !

Now, if I thought everyone who bought a 2.0lt CDB for £50.00, would go 2.35lt (parts from me of course ) I'd be selling 2.0lt CDB's at £50.00 all day long

Roll up, roll up, get your 2.0lt CDB's here, £50.00 each, 2 for £90 quid

Of course mate - 3rd March at DS Automotives (used to be G-Force) - will be a good group of high-power scoobies in there

Mark.

To be honest I am thinking beyond my current setup. Its more a query incase my current setup fails. Weak points I see are the Eagle rods I've heard various reports about these some good some bad. You never know what to think.

The other weak point I foresee problems with is my current open deck block. Bearing in mind it has been bored and honed to take 93mm pistons so am worried about what the now thinner standard cylinder walls will take.

I am planning 2.0 bar max at some stage. Although again I am getting conflicting opinions with some people that the block should be ok for this.

What are your opinions on this?

I'm hoping for a nice 2 bar map on Friday mate.

Just hope my gearbox lasts for another month or so

How much oversize is 93mm? Mine is 1mm oversize and I think that was 93mm - but can't really remember

3rd oversize if i remember rightly. 92.25mm = 1st 92.5mm =2nd 93mm =3rd iirc.

I have everthing in place (six speed etc) just need a new clutch and turbo to reach the dizzy heights of 450+bhp.

I think you lot have something 'strange' for breakfast!

Great read.

Hope for a very detailed report from you all, esp Terry.

I think Mark has me weighed up too...but i never get a bargain from anywhere, so my CDB is an expensive gem in stock under the bench.

Surely the only thing to do with a CDB is to bore and stroke to 2.35?

I think it costs almost no more in the end.
The heads need opening out to the bore dia and all that anyway, and bid top hat sleeves are nice for both sizes.

The basic machine work is 'cheap' but the bits are not 'cheap' and the end result is fab!
Remember the gearbox and even driveshafts at 500 x 500.

Got the gearbox

Groupbuy on built 2.5L CDB short blocks

My future plans sort of revolve around doing something like this, hence the complete 2.0L CDB short engine sat in the garage.

On a serious note if there were a few interested parties in going down the same route at the same time, i'm sure we could leverage some discount on the parts etc.
