Default Engine oil,gearbox oil,anti-freeze.

Now my car is out of warranty i'm going to do the servicing myself.
Just need some opinions on the above, have used the search function but searching for oil or oil change isn't too helpful.

Need Engine oil type
Gearbox/rear diff oil recommendations.
Anti-freeze - handbook says Subaru only but will any good brand be just as good?

Did the spark plugs, fuel filter and air filter today, just the rest to do tomorrow.

Cheers, Andy

for gearbox oil, a popular choice is castrol syntrax, I use this as well and it allows for a smooth gear change. I cant remember the viscosity but its something like 75w something. This is popular for classics anyway.
For antifreeze, use one that is suitable for aluminium engines (most probably are these days but worth checking), Oil, well depending on year of car and mods etc can affect oil choice. For a standard(ish) classic, then 10w40 semi or fully synthetic is okay, however seeing as your is out just out of warranty I imagine its not a classic lol. Ask at the garage where it was serviced to see what oil they used (viscosity and if semi or fully synthetic etc) Chances are they use a cheap brand (assuming scooby dealer) so just buy a better quality if the same viscosity.

Cheers, it's a newage (just) on which i'd extended the warranty.

It's completely standard and I don't intend modding the engine so recommendations for that spec would be great

Andy

I have a newage sti 6 speed and have used the following oils in the gearbox:

Whatever is in it from new;
Shell, as recommended by subaru;
Silkolene Syntran Syn5 Fully synthetic;
Castrol Syntrax semi synthetic;
Motul Gear 300 fully synthetic.

For the smoothest gearchange particularly from cold I would say go with the Castrol syntrax. The shell isn't bad either, but syntrax gets it from cold.

For quietness of the drivetrain I would say the Motul. Gearchange is not quite as good as the syntrax but still fine. This is currently in the car, used every day.

I would steer clear of the Silkolene, I had real problems with gearchanges when this was in, hence changed it after about 1000 miles for the Syntrax.

In the rear diff I have had the original from new oil, Subaru recommended stuff you get from the dealer, and now the motul EP stuff suitable for lsds (can't remember the exact name). I can only say since having the motul oils in the car is quieter.

I imagine the syn5 would be ok in the rear diff but haven't tried it.

Antifreeze, I seem to remember seeing Duckhams on one of the bills from my local subaru specialist. Make sure you get something suitable for all year round and has corrosion inhibitors in.

Engine oil, mainly used motul 300v 15w50, but also used silkolene Pro S or R 10w50 and motul 300v 10w40. I am on my 3rd jdm impreza, have done over 100000 miles in them and have never needed a rebuild or had an oil related problem except a leak. I change oil and filter in the current car every 5000 miles.

Thanks all,
Went for Castrol engine oil 5w30 as recommended in the handbook.
Valvoline SynPower 75W-90 Gear oil (will report back when i've driven it for a bit).
Coolant was Comma Xstream longlife.

Ended up taking off the intercooler to fill up the gearbox oil but not too bad a job.

Thanks for all the replies especially on engine oil, quite a variation in specs used by people!! I'll see how I get on with this lot, I intend to start doing the engine oil every 5k now anyway so can always switch for something different next time.

Only bit I haven't done is the rear diff, had a late start today and ran out of light. Anyone know if you can do it without jacking the car?
