Question FUELLING QUESTION FOR JDM WRX???

I have a 1993 MY WRX (GC8A48D). The dealership I bought it from said that it's fine to run the engine on at least 97 RON fuel - which I do.

However, I've also read elsewhere that the ignition should be retarded to ward against detonation when holding high revs in top gear for any length of time. Is this correct? If so, do I have to buy a generic 'map' in the form of a readily available chip upgrade for the standard ECU, to achieve this?

If anyone out there can put me on the straight and narrow regarding this somewhat grey area of <ahem> grey imports, it'd be very, very appreciated - as I do not wish to blow my engine anytime soon!

Thanks, John.

www.enduringsolutions.com.
a very popular solution.
The ecu will retard the igntion to a point.
I run my 93wrx on v-power or Tescos 99 ron for 3 years (optimax before v-power came out)

Have YOU had this re-map upgrade?...

IMHO a 93WRX will be fine if standard. But if you start pushing the boost up or impove the breathing abilities, then you need to guard against detonation with a remap.

Nope but if you do a search on here you will find plenty of people who have.
I've not gone this way as i'm keeping my options open with regard to getting a remappable ecu.

Thanks for this.

It IS the standard 238bhp motor, apart from the addition of an after-market 3-inch bore system with de-cat centre-pipe (but OEM turbo-back 'catted' downpipe). Will this freer-breathing exhaust mean a re-map is needed anyhow?...

Thanks

John

93wrx doesn't have a centre cat only 1 in the downpipe.
Doesn't need a remap i've been running mine decatted for about 6 months and is fine also has an induction kit on it.
i've put it on a r/r to check the fuelling etc and it was fine.
