Default classic blowing exhaust advice please

hi all, need some advice. i am close to buying a classic impreza however the guy selling it says the exhaust is blowing at the downpipe by the turbo. im a long way from the car so before i bother going anywhere i thought someone could tell me if this could be something serious or whether it could be something simple like a new gasket! would it be possible to still drive the car home. cheers

it difficult to check if its blowing smoke. there could be several reason it could either be requiring new valve seals or turbo or blowby. Check what smoke is coming out of the exhaust if its smell like burn oil

If its a gasket then providing your ok witha bit of DIY mechanics, then 2 -3 hours will see it good. If its the downpipe itself corroded and you still like the car negotiate the cost of a replacement into the deal, the car will be drivable with the blowing, might get a bit smelly in the cabin though as there are some bulk head grommets in that area.

ok does the lack of smoke suggest it is more likely to be just a seal??

how much you looking at spending?

tbh not worth even looking at if its got problems, what else is wrong and not been sorted would be my next question.

you pays your money you takes your chance but buy a shed and it will be as reliable as a shed

if there are 2 problems then definately walk away, its not worth the hassle or the grief and the chances are you will experince both if you buy that car. As Tidgy says and like I said earlier, there are plenty of cars out there that do not need stuff like that doing.

If the downpipe is knackered you are looking at over 100 to get a replacement, then you need to get it fitted, free if you do it yourself, or bank on probably another 100 at a garage (depends how easy the old one comes off) the leaking manifold, is this the inlet manifold? if so expect a few hours labour removing/replacing + parts, so possibly looking at £500 to get it road legal once you have it imo. Also if you test drove it with blowing downpipe and manifold, it would drive like a pig, fuel economy would be bad (not great anyway) and there would be a chance of further damage occuring, plus you would not know if there were any more serious problems lying beneath the surface.

Still a bargain?

to be honest, 2.5k isnt a lot and you may struggle to get something decent at that price. Not being funny here, but have you got the money to be able to run and insure it?

yes thats all been taken into consideration, which leaves me with 2500. theres quite a few at that price but they have something or other which needs sorting, and a leaky exhaust seems easy enough!

If he knows what is wrong then why won't he fix it to get to a state that'll get it sold?

To be honest, if you can find a half decent Impreza for £2500, bite their arm off!
If a blowing downpipe/turbo gasket is the only problem, why doesn't the guy fix it himself?

3 - 4 hrs then definately not worth it, costs there, 2 tanks to get back (approx £80) it all adds up.
