Default misfire query

Hiya, driving on the motorway when the car started shuddering violently, and losing power. After diagnosis from the RAC man, he said this was due to engine 'misfire' caused by a faulty hose due to wear and tear.

As i had my 90,000 mile service last week, could this has been detected prior to the service or is this a general wear and tear problem that might occur for a car that is 10 years old ?

Secondly, any ideas how much this would cost to repair ? and any recommended specialists near Watford?

Thanks

I would not jump to any conclusions with what the rac man said to be honest ... what hose did he say was worn that would cause this misfire? I'd also do a search on the usual coil pack(s), plugs, HT leads and MAF issues to see if its one of those.
