Is this a normal everyday occurrance?
Ive had when drag racing 80-90 when I hit the rev limiter (by accident) or this summer when the top mount couldnt cope with the heat 70-80( lots of octane booster helped keep it down to normal levels), but generally I only get 6-12 when the weather is cooler and I have a good tank of fuel.

Every engine is slightly different but generally the 92~96 is the noisiest..
45 is probably fine.. although cannot be certain not having heard this particular engine.
the 97~98 engine is slightly quieter and the 99~onwards quieter still..
Clipping the limiter will see a big knock reading pretty often as it cuts the fuel.
Best to try and avoid doing so.
If it flickered the check engine light then it must have been noiser than normal.. when mapped I set the noise level the engine light will flash just above the noise level observed whilst mapping and known not to be actual knock whilst listening with detcans.. I suspect Andy will have done the same.

Just had a blast up the bypass, changed up at the shift light(6200ish) and highest reading was 33 with no knock light. I may lower the point at which the shift light comes on so as not to over rev it. My reactions are a little slow when it goes to changing up when the light come on.

16 is the max I have seen on mine. Stays between 5 and 10 for casual driving.
Can someone tell me how to set the point at which the CEL comes on using the FC commander?

every engine is different, the important comparison is between the knock counts you are concerned about and the "normal" everyday background noise.
On my old 99, normal background was 4-6 and 18 was the onset of Det (all /100).
