Default camshaft tightness?

I have just put the cams back in the heads and i have noticed that there is a difference between how tight the cams are to turn when the cam caps are on?

On both heads, the inlet cams will turn nice and freely by hand but the ex cams i need to use a bit of effort to turn them, they can be done by hand but not half as easy as the inlets, is this normal or do i have issues to deal with regarding the ex cams?

They can sometimes feel a bit 'tight' if you're using a new cam seal.

Try rotating them with the seal removed to see if they are turning free.

The caps aren't pinned, so it's possiblr to fit them slightly offset, even if you think they are straight.

Fit the caps one at a time, checking the cam is free. Sometimes you need to tap the cap forwards or backwards to centralise it. If you're not sure, take the cap off, and you will see a witness mark where it's rubbing.

Also, only use a VERY thin film of oil for checking, because thick assembley lube can lock the cam up.

Once you get them right, scribe the cap/head so you can refit them, and use the lube.

Mark.

I have some very good quality contact oil which i have used a lot and its very good, i had labled the caps so i couldn't put them on them incorrectly either, i shall check them one at a time as you say and see what happens, cheers all.

it can only take 1 cap to be fitted the wrong way round or swapped with another for it to be tight

i by mistake fitted 1 cap on a GTO the wrong way round and that made the cam hard to turn, turned it round and all was fine

so make sure you sort this before you fire it up or it will seize

expanding on what has been said.. the caps have markings for location and which way around they do.. I know you said you have marked them.. just check the original markings for which way around.

i'm quite sure that i have the caps in the correct place, i drew on a bit of paper where they went and labeled the drawings with the cap numbers so that i didn't get it wrong, i will just have to have another look and see if i can see anything untoward!
Cheers for your help gents

they also have a direction as well as being in the right place.

Oh and you also need to silicone seal between cap and head on the front ones.

i think i have sussed it!!! i said they needed to be reshimmed, well i checked how tight they are and the exhaust ones are tighter than .05mm and are i think, touching the cam lobe, these are the ones i had recut so would make sense that they are now too tight, doh!!!!!!
