I've just bought some Michelin chains out here in Switz.... They look good, simple to fit, will no doubt be testing them when the ski season starts. Cost CHF99.00, which is about £45 in old money. Bound to have them in Halfrauds.

Over here the recommendation is to put the chains only on the front tyres, so you'll need one pack of two. To quote:

"Fit chains at bays where you see the "Fit Chains Here" sign. Always fit chains to driving wheels only. When required, four wheel drive vehicles should fit chains to front wheels."

I guess you could buy a pack of four and put them all round, but a bit excessive I think. Most Alpine roads and resorts clear the roads pretty well. It's just the residential roads that can get a bit slippy. Great fun all the same!

By the way, mind the Swiss motorways, they are just starting to increase the number of speed cameras significantly. 17 cameras on a 40km stretch where I live!! (Lausanne to Geneva). Mad. Alpine roads are still the best roads though.
One motto for alpine driving: If there's an opportunity and you can see far enough ahead, overtake. Don't get stuck behind Sunday drivers!

nope, i can asure you there are no alps in helsinki, in the winter you got slush, grey and cold. But venture outside of the capital and you got an abundance of snow covered roads, which are great fun to drive on, although myself i've never had the need for snow chains, or seen anyone else using them, perhaps if you venture up to lapland...

When I went down to the French Alps for a skiing hol, I picked up a cheap second hand set of 16" alloys with winter tyres on off good ol' Scoobynet, then picked up a pair of chains from the French motorway services. They were cheap enough and plentiful there, even more so as you start getting nearer the Ski areas.

Wouldn't bother getting the chains in Blighty as they seem to cost about double what they are on the continent.

Car was faultless on snow covered local roads and was out and about when a lot of holidaymakers were well stuck.

Enjoy it.

Nige.

Winter tyres and some cheap wheels as mentioned..! (most winter tyres will run perfectly ok on dry roads FWIW).

thanks guys - very helpful
tempted not to buy any chains in thre uk & wait until I get to France. Only problem is that I might drive through the night (to get an extra days skiing in) and would be gutted if I couldn't get to the resort because I couldn't find any where open to buy some chains...
